The rebels say they want better conditions for poor Indians and democracy. --Jan. 2: Rebels abandon San Cristobal and attack army headquarters in the outskirts of San Cristobal. Army attacks Ocosingo. Former Gov. Absalon Castellanos is kidnapped. --Jan. 3: Army claims to recapture four main cities taken by rebels. --Jan. 4: Reporters find five bodies in Ocosingo, apparently executed. --Jan. 7: Zapatista communique agrees to talks. Bomb explodes in commercial center in Mexico City, another in Acapulco. One woman hurt. --Jan. 10: Salinas appoints Foreign Minister Manuel Camacho Solis as government envoy. --Jan. 10-16: Hundreds of thousands march in anti-war protests in Mexico City. --Jan. 12: Salinas declares unilateral cease-fire. --Jan. 16: Salinas announces amnesty for rebels who lay down arms.
