From: CEDAR::AARONLK "RABBLE TROUSER" 18-MAR-1997 22:06:50.16 To: @PAX96 CC: Subj: minutes from last meeting Here's the minutes of today's meeting which had 14 people there. 1. Report on Intercollegiate Peace Fellowship Conference (a mouthful) Five GC students went to the annual IPF conference that is a gathering of Mennonite students who care about peace. This year it was in Fresno, CA. Unfortunately due to a mistake and some bad connections we arrived late and missed a lot of the conference. The theme was, "Jesus a nonviolent Activist". The highlights included featured speaker Ched Meyers who spoke on "the spiral of violence", a day-long trip to Yosemite, and a lot of networking and getting to know other students (there were only about 25 students there). Next year the IPF conference will be at EMU. 2. CPT 700 hour fast We talked about the fast that CPT is doing for the 700 houses that the Israeli government is threatening to demolish. This is one of the issues that will be covered at the letter drive on Thursday. We will be urging others to join us (outside of PAX) and fast a day or so before March 28th to support CPT and the Palestinians who may lose their homes. 3. Letter Drive on Thursday From 9:30pm-12:00am there will be another letter drive this Thursday in KMY. ***WITH REFRESHMENTS*** Issues include the CPT 700 hour fast (writing to Madeleine Albright) Salvage Logging Nuclear Disarmement Paper, envelopes, and stamps will be provided. So come drop by! 4. An idea came up that we should see if PAX and All Campus Worship could jointly sponsor discussions during the regular All Campus Worship time slot or worship service. One possible topic would be homosexuality. This will be looked into. 5. Anyone interested in collecting information on downtown alternatives to shopping at Walmart, should meet Thursday at 9am at the Westlawn drivable circle to go do that. Talk to Tim Godshall or Jeff Miller. 6. April 4-6 there is an environmental conference near Pittsburgh, PA. It is put on by the Student Environmental Action Coalition (SEAC) for the surrounding states. I and three others went to the one last fall (having never ever been to an environmental conference before) and it was so superb that words just cannot describe it. Cost is ONLY $17 for housing, workshops, and food. There'll be workshops on environmental law, watersheds, natural healing, dumpster diving, vegetarianism, Alleghany National Forest, waste management, non-violent direct action, and more. You really do not need to have any prior knowledge of the environment to attend this, and you'll learn a lot! Contact me if you want to go or want stories of how fun it was. Next meeting = next tuesday 5:40pm westlawn lounge per usual Peace, Aaron
