DESCRIPTION:Law enforcement agencies preparing for neo-Nazi rally \nBy J.R.
Mendoza \nThe Capital-Journal \nLocal law enforcement agencies say they h
ave been working diligently \npreparing for Saturday's 'White Unity Blvd R
ally' outside the \nStatehouse.\n\n'We can't really quantify that\,' said
Trooper Mark Engholm\, of the \nKansas Highway Patrol\, when asked how man
y hours have gone into the \nplanning.\n\nThe National Socialist Movement\
 , a neo-Nazi group\, will rally from 1 \nto 3 p.m. Law enforcement agencie
s have been working with the group\, \nas well as with groups that will ha
ve a counterprotest nearby.\n\nCounterprotest groups will have an alternat
ive rally from 1 to 3 p.m. \nat the Charles Curtis State Office Building\,
S.W. 10th and Jackson. \nIt is sponsored by the NAACP and supported by th
e Topeka Center for \nPeace and Justice and Concerned Citizens of Topeka.\
 n\nThe highway patrol\, Capitol Police\, Shawnee County Sheriff's Office \
nand Topeka Police Department are working together on security for the \nr
ally. Engholm said there are meetings daily and commanders have \nconducte
d weekly meetings for a month.\n\nThe agencies won't disclose how many off
icers they will have \nproviding security at the rally.\n\n'We can't talk
about the specific arrangements prior to the event\,' \nEngholm said. 'We'
re working closely with other law enforcement \norganizations and groups a
t the rally to make the rally safe.'\n\nEngholm didn't know how much the r
ally would cost the agencies\, but \nhe said some officers might be workin
 g overtime.\n\n'It depends on how the rally goes\,' Engholm said.\n\nThe c
ost depends on how many officers are at the rally and how long \nit lasts\
, said sheriff's Sgt. Curtis Wagers.\n\nHe said the agencies had been work
ing well together -- 'to help each \nother out' -- to prepare for the rall
y.\n\nTopeka police Lt. John Sidwell said his department also had no idea
\nof the cost and wasn't keeping track. But he was certain overtime \ncost
s would be incurred.\n\nSidwell said the agencies would be well-prepared.\
n\n'We've covered the possible scenarios that could come into play\,' \nSi
dwell said. 'We've prepared for them as best as we can.'\n\nThe law enforc
ement agencies have enacted several security measures \nfor Saturday. All
state buildings in the Capitol complex will be \nclosed to the public that
day. Those attending the rally will pass \nthrough metal detectors and ar
e subject to search. Items such as \nfood\, firearms and backpacks will be
prohibited.\n\nThose who don't want to enter the rally areas can watch fr
om \nsurrounding sidewalks.\n\nSidwell agreed with Wagers that the agencie
 s were working well with \neach other.\n\n'We have a strong relationship\,
 ' Sidwell said. 'There's no problem.'\n\nRally plans\n\nLaw enforcement ag
encies are prohibiting the following items at the \nCapitol complex:\n\n?
 Firearms\; knives\; edged\, pointed or impact weapons\; chemical \nirritan
ts\; packages\, backpacks or coolers\; cans or bottles (glass or \nplastic
)\; food\; signs or flags mounted on poles.\n\nThe following streets will
 be closed starting at 7:30 a.m. until the \nrally ends:\n\n? S.W. 9th Stre
et from Topeka Boulevard to S. Kansas Ave.\n\n? S.W. 10th Street from Tope
ka Boulevard to S. Kansas Ave.\n\n? S.W. Harrison Street from 8th to Hunto
 on\n\n? S.W. Jackson Street from 8th to 11th streets\n\n? No on-street par
king will be allowed on closed streets from 5 p.m. \nFriday until the stre
ets reopen Saturday.\n\n? Public parking available: State Parking Lot No.
 1\, located south \nand west of the Kansas Judicial Center\, 301 W. 10th S

DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 3rd we are having a benefit show at the Musi

. This show will be a little different than \nthe last one. I can't guar
entee it\, but I don't think this show will \nhave guys in monkey suits or
cross dressers or goth-ish bands or blue-\ngrass hillbilly music like the
last show did. This show will be \ndecidedly less weird. Which is kind
of too bad\, I like a good \nhealthy dose of weird\, but this show should
be good too. Most of the \nmusic you'll hear is pretty listener friendly

Club. The tables will be there as long as each \norganization decides to
stay. They should have information about \nwhat their organization is doi
ng and people to answer questions.\n\n7:45 Mark Robertson opens things up
by telling us more about the \nGreen Party and his campaign for the State
  House of Representatives \nfrom Columbia.\n\n8:00 The Highway 50 Band\,
from Columbia\, a band that could be \ndescribed as 'groove\,' don't be fo
oled that because this band is the \nopener that they aren't talented. Th
ese bands are in sort of a \nrandom order\, and our first band is as good
as any\, so for those who \nwant to show up early\, you're in for a good s
how.\n\n8:45 Fran Pope speaks about Mizzou's Tigers for Tigers program th
at \nis working to help save Tigers in the wild.\n\n9:00 Green Means Go!
is a good old college rock band from Kansas \nCity. They're pretty popula
r where they come from so maybe you've \nheard of them. To find out more
or listen to their music or even buy \none of their t-shirts go to www.gre
en-means-go.com\n\n9:45 Silas Allard\, President of Amnesty International
at MU\, will \nspeak on some Human Rights issues\, although I'm not sure
which ones.\n\n10:00 Supraluxx is a band that's coming here all the way f
rom \nLawrence\, Kansas to play in this show. Their music is pretty cool\
, \nyou can listen to some of it at \nhttp://artists.mp3s.com/artists/348/
supraluxx.html\n\n10:45 Dan Vietts is a local lawyer and host of the radi
o show Sex\, \nDrugs\, and Rock'n Roll. He will speak on your legal right
s and how \nto deal with cops and other such useful info.\n\n11:00 One Ju
ne Oracle is a very snazzy group\, I'm not sure how to \ndescribe them\, t
 hey've got a cool\, flowing electric sound\, very \ncatchy. They're from
here in Columbia and I wouldn't be surprised if \nthey ended up being one
of the major acts in this area. Their \nwebsite is www.onejuneoracle.com
so give them a listen.\n\n11:45 Keith Brekhus who\, for those of you who
haven't heard by now\, \nis playing David to U.S. Congressman Kenny Hulsho
f`s Goliath. This \nis a very worthwhile fight\, as Kenny is a junior Joh
n Ashcroft\, the \nDemocrats are scarcely endorsing their candidate and he
's scarcely \ncampaigning\, and Keith's putting up yard signs all over tow
n\, giving \nspeeches\, doing interviews\, and trying to make a race of it
. We need \nto support this guy\, he stands for all the right things. He
'll give \nthe last speech of the night.\n\n12:00 We'll close the night o
ut with Lola's Ruin\, an acoustic group \nwith female vocals. Very pretty

DESCRIPTION:Save Brown v. Board of Education ? \nBuild the New Civil Rights
Movement\nOrganize the March to the US Supreme Court\n\n-----------------
-----\n\nOn May 14\, 2002 the federal Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in Ci
ncinnati\, Ohio ruled to uphold the affirmative action program at the Univ
ersity of Michigan Law School. This stunning victory for affirmative actio
n in Grutter v. Bollinger marks a turning point in the fight for integrati
on and equality in America. \n\nThis victory proves that through mass mobi
lization it was possible to do what most civil rights leaders\, political
pundits and court-watchers said was impossible. We organized\, we fought a
nd WE WON!! \n\nAll of our collective effort so far has paid off. Thousand
s of people across the country have participated in the new civil rights m
ovement in various ways\, from signing a petition\, to making a financial
contribution\, to attending the district court trial in Detroit to marchin
g in a cold\, drenching rain through the gray streets of Cincinnati at the
appeals hearing on December 6\, 2001. \n\nThe fact of our victory must ga
lvanize our collective determination and the narrow margin of our victory
(a 5-4 decision) must serve as an alarm. We must summon new energy and new
forces to the fight!\n\nNow the CRITICAL BATTLE lies ahead. The future of
this nation hangs in the balance ? its progress\, democracy\, integration
\, all civil rights and civil liberties will be determined by the outcome
of this historic fight. The outcome of the Grutter case will either open u
p a new fight for integration and equality in American education?the simpl
e promise of Brown v. Board of Education?or it will kill Brown for all pra
ctical purposes.\n\nNow affirmative action must be defended before the US
SUPREME COURT in Washington DC. It is a very conservative body. We cannot
win at the U.S. Supreme Court unless we mobilize tens of thousands of peop
le to march on Washington when Grutter v. Bollinger is heard. No defender
of affirmative action can have any illusions that this elite\, conservativ
e organization will act for integration and equality unless they feel comp
elled to do so. (There is no hearing date set at this point. The court may
make the announcement this winter for a hearing date possibly as early as
the winter or spring 2003.)\n\n\nOur victory in Cincinnati teaches us how
to win\n\nBeyond its own intrinsic importance\, the victory in the UM Law
School case provides a very important lesson in how to win the coming bat
tle at the US Supreme Court. We must organize and mobilize the people of t
his country who stand for integration and equality. A strong litigation st
rategy is necessary but not sufficient of itself. Mass social struggle is
the key. Just as litigation alone could not have dismantled Jim Crow and w
on affirmative action in the 1960s\, litigation alone now cannot successfu
lly defend affirmative action from the rightwing attack. \n\nWe have a pat
tern and a framework for victory. The only question is\, can we together m
obilize the sentiment and the forces in action that can move our society f
orward and keep it from crashing backward. Our collective task now is to p
repare the new civil rights movement for this next step. \n\nAll of us who
have played a role so far should feel deep pride at our accomplishment. W
e banded together and our determined effort won the day. History is callin
g on all of us again\, this time louder and more insistently. Our first vi
ctory must not have been in vain.\n\n\nWe are fighting to save Brown v. Bo
ard of Education\n\nBy this case the fate of affirmative action will be de
termined\, and with it\, every integration program of any kind\, every pol
icy aimed at offsetting the institutional inequalities that shape and defo
rm life and opportunity in America. Whether Brown v. Board of Education it
self is to be overturned for practical purposes?all this hangs in the bala
nce.\n\nThe first year after affirmative action was banned by the Fifth Ci
rcuit Court in the Hopwood case\, black enrollment dropped more than 90% a
nd Mexican-American enrollment dropped just short of 60% at the University
of Texas School of Law. Now\, despite one of the most ambitious outreach
and recruitment programs ever launched for minority students in higher edu
cation\, the incoming class for the fall 2002 is only 7.5% Mexican-America
n and 3% black. This is in the state of Texas which now has a 42% minority
population!\n\nOver the last few years a concerted\, largely successful a
nd overwhelmingly unopposed assault has taken place on integration plans i
n K-12 education across the country. From Charlotte to Boston to Seattle\,
voluntary K-12 desegregation plans have been eliminated by the judiciary
despite broad public support by people of all races. Court-ordered desegre
gation plans have been eliminated despite clear and undisputed evidence of
ongoing segregation. \n\nThe outcome of this case will determine whether
any desegregation program of any kind is banned by law. It will determine
whether any positive measure of any kind that attempts to offset the funda
mental social inequalities of race and sex will be legal?but it will also
do much more than that. The outcome of Grutter will set the context for th
e social and political development of our whole society just as each key U
S Supreme Court decision concerning race\, racism and segregation has in t
he past. For example\, Dred Scott in 1857\, Plessy v. Ferguson in 1896\, a
nd Brown v. Board of Education in 1954.\n\nThe outcome of this case will b
e the scale in which questions of social policy and justice are weighed fo
r the foreseeable future. In form\, the decision of the court will be lega
l but the content of the decision will be political and social. If we lose
\, it will be a setback of historic proportions. Contrarily\, if we succee
d in defending affirmative action at the US Supreme Court\, we will have a
n opportunity to align our society with its aspiration and self-image of b
eing a society that holds integration and equality of opportunity in high
esteem. This will be no small task\, but if we win at the US Supreme Court
\, it will open up avenues for progress that we can see only vaguely now.\
n\n\nWe have a plan and we need your help\n\nBAMN\, and United for Equalit
y and Affirmative Action (UEAA is the umbrella organization of student int
ervenors in Grutter v. Bollinger) are determined to win this fight. We see
its ramifications and our consciousness of the magnitude of those ramific
ations makes us utterly determined to organize the march to the US Supreme
Court. Many thousands of people of all races around the country share thi
s determination. Together\, we will build this march. We will do so irresp
ective of what any other organization decides. However\, to succeed at the
US Supreme Court we will almost certainly need to mobilize more forces th
an any one or two organizations can mobilize on their own. \n\nAll civil r
ights organizations must be united in this fight. Most civil rights organi
zations have done too little to defend affirmative action. It is going to
take a new\, grassroots\, independent\, mass civil rights movement to unit
e all the existing civil rights organizations in a single effective strugg
le to defend the gains of Brown v. Board of Education in American history.

DESCRIPTION:Whether we like it or not\, most of us are enrolled in a class
called 'Violence 101.' This class is not confined to a particular setting
or time of day. Nobody asks if we want to attend. We don't need letters of
reference or a high grade point average. It is taught everywhere\, open t
o all. Our teachers are the media\, with their flow of violent images and
messages\, and our society's values of consumerism\, rugged individualism
and superiority. Consciously or not\, we are continually being schooled in
the logic and practice of emotional\, verbal\, physical or structural vio
lence. \n\nFrom Violence To Wholeness is a study and action program offere
d by the Franciscan Pace e Bene organization that explores nonviolence as
a creative\, powerful\, and effective process for addressing and resolving
the conflicts in our lives and in the life of the world. Drawing on the v
 ision of Jesus\, Gandhi\, Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, Shelley Douglass\, Fa
nny Lou Hamer and many others\, this program offers resources to deepen th
e journey from fear to freedom\, from despair to hope\, from violence to w
holeness. Pace e Bene is convinced that one of the most important solution

in\, stuff like that. Then students are probably coming later on to Union
Square.\n\nOther cities and internationally\n\nAs far as other cities\, we
have been getting e-mails from all over the place\; Northern CA\, Hartfor
d\, Oklahoma. We have even gotten e-mails from Germany\, France and Pakist
an from students who are trying to organize something for the 20th. And of
course\, at the meeting this weekend\, their were people from Philly\, LA
\, S.F. Bay Area\, Seattle\, Hampshire College all of whom are organizing
some sort of event\n\nLocal Campus Organizing \nUSF\, Mills\, UC Berkeley
 \, Stanford\, Chico\,City College\, Sf State\, UC Santa Cruz\, UC Davis\nA
 ctivities include teach-ins\, banner drops\, Guerrilla Theater\, Polls\, R
allies and more.\n\nHere are some ideas from Osage in New York for how to
create a buzz on campus for events.\nHere were some of my ideas: In the da
ys leading up to NOV 20 -- \n1. Take a poll on how the students are feelin
g about the war (the person who posted about Mills madae me think of that)
.\n2. Hand out fact sheets and maybe have something at the bottom that say
s like\, 'This is the serious shit the Asses of Evil are planning. What ca
n WE do to stop them? How can we show them we're SERIOUS? That standing wi
th the people of the world and opposing our government's injustices are th
e MAIN priorities in our lives?' 'We will not be lied to' or 'our futures
depend on THIS\, not whether we skip math' (something sharper than that la
st point\, but I think you know what I'm getting at) :-)\n3. Stage (formal
/informal) debates between students and/or teach-ins with someone (like Mi
les Solay out here) representing NION.\n4. Wear the NION t-shirts and take
the pledge. In class\, at lunch\, etc. Ask teachers to lead students in t
aking the pledge.\n5. The globe flag. Hang them in classrooms\, on the fla
 g pole\, etc.\n6. Then\, on NOV 19\, SATURATE the schools with flyers\, et
c.\nThis way you kinda create a buzz and people get a sense of the serious
ness of the situation\nPLEASE FORWARD...\n\n Geographical Scope:

can attend our local petitioning events here in the DC area from 12:30 to
3:00 at the Eastern Market and at a holiday bazaar in Union Station. We
will provide petitions\, fact sheets\, stickers\, and talking points on EC

DESCRIPTION:Students Against Sanctions & War in Iraq (SASWI) would like to
invite students from American campuses (and elsewhere) to participate in t
he Pan-Canadian Student Anti-War Conference. The more American students t

n-wide student day of action against war in Iraq--rather than just a pan-C

(SASWI)\n\nOpen call to all students across Canada and Québec\n\nPan-Cana
 dian Student Anti-War Conference\nJanuary 30 to February 2\, 2003\nUnivers
ity of Toronto\,\nToronto\, Ontario\n\nOpposition to a new war on Iraq is
growing worldwide. In Britain\, over 400\,000 people marched against war a
t the end of September\, including thousands of students from all over Bri
tain. The mobilization on October 26 of 100\,000 in Washington\, D.C. and
60\,000 in San Francisco brought many thousands of students onto the stree
ts to oppose the war against Iraq. And in Britain on October 31\, dozens o
f protests took place at universities and colleges\, including occupations
  at Cambridge University\, Liverpool\, Manchester\, Brighton\, and Leeds.
In Sheffield\, 500 students occupied a\nfaculty building sponsored by Boei
ng. In London there were occupations at Goldsmith?s\, King?s College\, the
London School of Economics\, and many others.\n\nIn Canada and Québec\, a
nti-war coalitions are springing up on almost every campus with students b
uilding both their own campus anti-war actions and the January 18 North Am
erican day of action against war on Iraq. More recently\, thousands of stu
dents just participated in the pan-Canadian day of action against war in I
raq on November 16-17 which mobilised 35\,000 people in Canada and Québec.
\n\nAt a recent teach-in at the University of Toronto\, students from fift
een different universities\, colleges\, and high schools took part in a di
scussion called 'Students against war: Building an anti-war movement on th
e campuses'. A consensus emerged that it is not only possible but also nec
essary to begin building an anti-war movement among students all across th
e country.\n\nWith the threat of war looming larger every day\, we feel it
is now time for students across Canada and Québec to pull together in a u
nified network that can build a massive student movement against war in Ir
aq. Students Against War and Sanctions in Iraq (SASWI) would like to make
an open call to all students to participate in a pan-Canadian student anti
-war conference at the University of Toronto from Thursday\, January 30 to
Sunday\, February 2\, 2003. The conference will be accessible both to Eng
 lish- and French-speaking students.\n\nAlready a number of student anti-wa
r coalitions have expressed interest in supporting\, participating in\, an
d endorsing the conference. We welcome any anti-war\ncoalition\, peace org
 anisation\, student union\, cultural organisation\, faith group\, or stude
nt club that would like to get involved to send your endorsement to us by
email.\n\nIn the coming weeks\, we will be circulating a tentative confere
nce programme\, including a timetable. We look forward to your feedback an
d hope to post final details as soon as they are ready on our website: www
.project3media.com/iraq/.\n\nWe will also be organising committees of stud
 ent volunteers to organise registration\, housing\, food\, transportation\
, fundraising\, and social events. All students in the Toronto area who ar

 #105\;&#99\;&#115\;&#64\;&#121\;&#97\;&#104\;&#111\;&#111\;&#46\;&#99\;&#9
7\;\n.\n\nThe possibilities are huge of building a broad\,inclusive studen
t movement against war right across the country. We think that a pan-Canad
ian student anti-war co-ordination can play a role in helping to reach dee
per into every school\, every classroom\, and every campus with the messag
e that we can and must stop this war!\n\nTo endorse the conference or for
