DESCRIPTION:On 6th December 2008\, the Saturday midway through the UNFCCC\n
 Climate Talks (COP 14/MOP 4)\, in Poznan\, Poland \n\n
For last year\\'s Global Day of Action on Climate see here\n\n\n
This webpage has been set up to publicise and promote plans for demonstrat
ions on climate change\, to coincide with the United Nations Climate Talks
  (COP14/MOP4) in Poznan\, Poland\, December 1st to 12th 2008.\n\nWe intend
synchronised demonstrations around the world on Saturday December 6th 200
8 - in as many places as possible - to call on world leaders to take urgen
t action on climate change.\n\nThe \\'Call to Action\\' for these demonstr
ations and related events that will take place on December 6th 2008 is as
follows:\n\n“We demand that world leaders take the urgent and resolute a
ction that is needed to prevent the catastrophic destabilisation of global
climate\, so that the entire world can move as rapidly as possible to a s
tronger emissions reductions treaty which is both equitable and effective
in minimising dangerous climate change. \n\nWe demand that the long-indust
rialised countries that have emitted most greenhouse gases currently in th
e atmosphere take responsibility for climate change mitigation by immediat
ely reducing their own emissions as well as investing in a clean energy re
volution in the developing world. Developed countries must take their fair
share of the responsibility to pay for the adaptive measures that have to
be taken\, especially by low-emitting countries with limited economic res
ources. \n\nClimate change will hit the poorest first and hardest. All who
have the economic means to act\, must therefore urgently and decisively d
o so.”\n\nWe feel that there is an overwhelming need to create a grounds
well of global opinion to push for the urgent and radical action on climat
e change\, without which we risk a global catastrophe of unimaginable prop
ortions.\n\nTo help build for these demonstrations please find the contact
for your country\, below\, or if there is not yet one listed there contac

DESCRIPTION:A very warm welcome to the website for the World Indigenous Peo
ples Conference: Education 2008!\n\n \n\nPreparations are well underway fo
r what promises to be a very special cultural and learning event.\n\n \n\n
The World Indigenous Peoples Conference: Education (WIPC:E) is a triennial
conference of international significance that attracts peoples from aroun
d the globe to celebrate and share diverse cultures\, traditions and knowl
edge with a focus on world Indigenous education. The purpose of WIPC:E is
to provide a forum to come together\, share and learn and promote best pra
ctice in Indigenous education policies\, programs and practice. \n\n \n\nT
o be held on the traditional lands of the Kulin Nation\, Melbourne\, Austr
 alia from 7th - 11th December 2008\, WIPC:E 2008 will be a celebration of
our diverse cultures\, traditions and knowledge. It will provide us with t
he opportunity to showcase our efforts to provide educational experiences
suitable to our individual and unique communities and will be a time to re
joice in our strengths and capacity to uphold our traditions and knowledge
systems. It will also be a chance to consider how we\, as Indigenous peop
le\, would like to see education shaped into the future to meet our needs.
It is Australia’s Indigenous peoples’ vision that WIPC:E 2008 will be
solidly embedded in community knowledge.\n\n \n\nWIPC:E 2008 has the pote
ntial to impact positively on the educational outcomes and lives of Indige
nous people across the planet. Formal education provides us with a broad s
et of options to shape our own futures and with tools to tell our own stor
ies to the wider community\; our challenge is to balance the learnings fro
m formal systems within our own traditions. WIPC:E 2008 hopes to explore s
ome of the questions raised by living within competing knowledge systems a
nd look beyond the horizon where complementary knowledge can be used to sh
ape our own futures. \n\n \n\nThe Victorian Aboriginal Education Associati
on Inc is proud to be hosting this prestigious event. We look forward to w
elcoming you to our beautiful country and making your time in Melbourne an
educative and memorable experience. Geographical Scope: International

DESCRIPTION:Across the world there is excitement in the air with high hopes
for 2009. On every continent millions will be looking for a new administr
ation in Washington to change course. The world wants to see an end to U.S
. unilateral bullying\, to “might makes right” militarism\, and to war
s soaked in oil and blood while the planet is destroyed. \n\nWe share thes
e hopes. And we know that whatever the result of the November elections\,
turning them into realities will require broad\, creative and continuous a
ction and pressure from the people of the United States. We cannot sit bac
k and expect our elected leaders to change the course alone. Now\, more th
an ever\, we must ensure a popular mandate to end the war in Iraq and chan
ge the direction of our country. \n\nUnited for Peace and Justice is worki
ng hard to galvanize and organize a re-energized movement for peace. We ar
e convening our next National Assembly just six weeks after the elections
to keep building on the momentum of this period and to quickly prepare our
selves for the year ahead. Representatives of our 1\,400 member groups wil
l have an opportunity to come together and plan effective and united actio
n on new post-November terrain. \n\nWe believe that if the peace and justi
ce movement aims high and works hard\, 2009 can be a breakthrough year:\n2
009 can be the year Washington is forced to recognize that “time horizon
s” and “residual forces” are not enough\, that the U.S. must totally
withdraw from Iraq. \n2009 can be a year of decisive change in U.S.-Iran
ian relations\, with the “military option” and “regime change” tak
en “off the table” and all outstanding issues resolved through negotia
tion.\n2009 can see the end of the public assumption that Afghanistan is W
ashington’s “good war”\; and instead of sending more troops\, the U.
 S. can begin the process of negotiating reconciliation and peace with all
key Afghan and regional parties.\n2009 can bring a new level of popular de
bate on the U.S.-Israeli “special relationship” and a change in Washin
 gton’s blank-check-for-Israel policies\, which are a prime obstacle to e
nding the illegal occupation of Palestinian lands\, negotiating a just sol
ution to the Israel-Palestine conflict and establishing a nuclear-free Mid
dle East.\n2009 can be the year that the wrong-headed “war on terror”
framework that now guides U.S. policy is discarded\, and the U.S. begins t
o earnestly address the real causes of violence and instability by priorit
izing international cooperation to end global poverty\, ensure equitable a
ccess to life-sustaining resources\, and lead the world by example toward
the total elimination of nuclear weapons.\n2009 can be the year that that
the U.S. takes leadership in the fight against global warming and reduces
key sources of international conflict by renouncing dependence on fossil f
uels\, shelving plans for offshore oil drilling and new nuclear power plan
ts\, and investing seriously in the development of safe renewable\, source
s of energy.\n2009 can bring a massive reallocation of this country’s re
sources away from militarism and war toward providing health care and educ
ation for all while rebuilding the GulfCoast and the entire national publi
c infrastructure.\n2009 can be the year the U.S. reverses course and moves
to expand rather than curtail civil liberties and democratic rights\, bri
ng accountability back to government\, ensure equal rights for all\, and a
ggressively combat all discrimination based on race\, nationality\, religi
on\, gender\, immigration status and sexual orientation.\n2009 can be a ye
ar to end the racist demonization of immigrants and of entire peoples\, th
e raids on migrant workers and an end to the new homeland security detenti
on centers and racist border walls. \n2009 can be a year when global tra
de agreements that rob the global south of their resources while imposing
destructive social policies can be dismantled\, and when all future agreem
ents include real labor and environmental protections.\n\nThis is an ambit
ious agenda. It is also an urgent one\, for the interlocking crises facing
this country and the world not only are harming millions daily but threat
en the very future of the planet. There is no time to lose. We take heart
from the fact that the U.S. public is demanding a change in this country
s course\; large numbers – with new generations of young people in the
forefront - are already mobilized and pushing\, both within and beyond the
electoral arena\, in exactly these directions. \n\nIn the weeks immediat
ely following the November balloting\, every political force in the countr
y (and the world) will be taking stock of the results\, assessing the new
terrain\, and making plans to weigh in and influence events in 2009 and be
yond. The U.S. peace and justice movement needs to be in the very forefron
t of both assessment and action. \n\nWe aim to intensify the effort to bui
ld the broadest possible movement anchored in the communities especially h
ard-hit by all the horrors that flow from war\, militarism and violence: c
ommunities of color\, immigrants\, working and poor people\, women\, LGBT
people\, active-duty military personnel and veterans\, and youth. We look
forward to an exciting and energizing Assembly in which we assess how far
we have come in five-plus years of organizing\, educating and mobilizing -
and collectively determine plans to make 2009 a breakthrough year for pea
ce and justice. \n\nWe invite you to join us in Chicago on December 12-14\
 , 2008. Geographical Scope: National

DESCRIPTION:WHAT:\nGlobal Young Greens (GYG) is a worldwide network where g
reen youth organizations\, green political youth wings and individuals who
want to see environmental sustainability\, social justice\, grassroots de
mocracy and peace within our lifetimes converge.\n\nWHY:\nAt the last GYG
informal meeting and formal Global Greens Congress (www.globalgreens.org)
in May 2008 Sao Paulo\, Brazil\, an initial Indigenous presence was establ
ished but we need to continue the momentum. At that Congress\, the few Ind
igenous representatives in attendance proposed a resolution for the establ
ishment of an Inter-Tribal Federation of Indigenous Greens which unfortuna
tely did not pass. Surprisingly\, there were no Aboriginal representative
s with the Australian Greens\, no Maori with the New Zealand Greens\, no F
irst Nation with the Canadian Greens\, no Native Americans with the U.S. G
reens\, and only 4 Indigenous attendants from Brazil! The 2 Taiwan Indigen
ous members along with Brazil\\'s and one from Africa reminded the 1\,000+
greens from 80 countries that Indigenous people and Indigenous Issues can
\\'t be ignored. \n\nAt the GYG informal meeting we also rehashed the U.N.
PFII\\'s 2008 conclusions on the Indigneous-Climate Change situation duri
ng an international panel discussion and were given the OK to establish a
formal and on-going Indigenous Working Group within the GYG to cover all I
ndigenous issues the world over. \n\nSince the Global Greens and Global Y
oung Greens truly is a global movement--an international network of green
people aiming to gain political influence in modern society\, Indigenous p
eople need to be better physically represented in this movement and networ
 k. Furthermore\, the U.N.’s PFII should not be the only platform from w
hich Indigenous people are vocal on an international level. The “green
revolution” is here to stay and we need to “Indigenous-ize” it. \n\n
HOW:\nThe 2nd GYG Congress will be of 8 days including arrival and departu
re date to include trainings on various issues\, workshops and exposure vi
sits. Funding is available. Youth leaders interested in being the initiato
rs of an online Indigenous Working Group within the Global Young Greens\,
please contact Janna Schonfeld on the GYG steering committee to do so. Yo
uth leaders interested in participating in the next GYG Congress in Europe
\, Summer ’09 contact any of the steering committee members.\n\nWe (the
Indigenous community) are under represented in the Global Green network/mo
vement but should be leading the way. Find a way to get your Indigenous c
ommunity youth leader to Austria for this event where they can continue to
speak out for the global Indigenous community and your own community.\n
