DESCRIPTION:The Rouge Forum 2010 conference will be held at George Williams
College conference center in Williams Bay\, Wisconsin from August 2-5\, 2
010.\n\n\n\nThe gorgeous campus of George Williams College is located on G
eneva Lake in Williams Bay\, WI\, just 1.5 hours from Chicago and one hour
from Milwaukee and Madison\, WI. The retreat setting of the conference f
acilities will provide Rouge Forum attendees with a variety of options for
housing and meals.\n\n\n\nWatch this space for the call for papers and in
formation on travel\, lodging\, and conference activities.\n\n\n\nFor more
information contact conference coordinator Faith \n\nhe Rouge Forum is a
group of educators\, students\, and parents seeking a democratic society.
We are concerned about questions like these: How can we teach against raci
sm\, national chauvinism and sexism in an increasingly authoritarian and u
ndemocratic society? How can we gain enough real power to keep our ideals
and still teach--or learn? Whose interests shall school serve in a society
that is ever more unequal? \n\n\n\nWe are both research and action orient
ed. We want to learn about equality\, democracy and social justice as we s
imultaneously struggle to bring into practice our present understanding of
what that is. We seek to build a caring inclusive community which underst
ands that an injury to one is an injury to all. At the same time\, our car
ing community is going to need to deal decisively with an opposition that
is sometimes ruthless Geographical Scope: Regional

DESCRIPTION:The theme for the 2010 anarchism and Christianity conference em
erges out of the knowledge that without grasping the systems that shape ou
r society — without understanding as well as we can how we got to where
we are today — our ability to examine\, unmask and resist the oppressive
forces we encounter and create new\, just life-ways will be crippled. To
resist the powers of environmental destruction\, of empire\, of racism and
a host of other social sins we must have more than just a passing underst
anding of how these death-dealing problems came to be. We must be willing
to get at the root in order to discern a better way forward and sow new se
eds. Come and dig deep together. Geographical Scope: National

DESCRIPTION:The International Monetary Fund and the World Bank have a well-
deserved\nreputation for being the loan sharks of global capitalism. Both\
ninstitutions are infamous for forcing poor countries in the global south\
nto ruin their own economies in order to further enrich Western\ncorporati
ons. Nations who decline to borrow money at exorbitant interest\nrates and
then beggar their populations to pay it back (or worse\, default\non thei
r existing debt)\, are subjected to trade sanctions that have been\ndescri
bed as “the economic equivalent of nuclear war.”\nThe neoliberal regim
e represented by the IMF has generated intense\, and\nlargely successful\,
resistance across the world. In Argentina a popular\nrevolt in response t
 o the 2001 economic collapse\, caused by strict\nadherence to neoliberal p
olicies\, saw three governments toppled in a\nmonth. Piqueteros threw up b
arricades of burning tires on the highways\,\n workers took over their fac
tories\, and “Que se vayan todos!” became the\nrallying cry for an ent
ire nation. After the passage of NAFTA in 1994\, the\nZapatistas establish
ed their own autonomous territory in the Mexican state of Chiapas\n that s
urvives to this day\, in spite of continuous government repression.\nIn No
rth America and Europe massive protests greeted neoliberal elites at\never
y summit\, including Seattle in 1999 when the World Trade Organization\nme
eting was completely shut down. In Barcelona in 2001 the World Bank\ncance
led a summit entirely for fear of protests.\n\nMore recently\, world leade
rs have attempted to re-establish neoliberalism\nunder the guise of recove
ring from the economic collapse that they\nthemselves caused. The IMF has
been recapitalized with 1.1 trillion\ndollars from the G20 group of nation
 s. Employers everywhere are slashing\nwages\, as governments cut social se
rvices correspondingly\, all justified\nby calls to “share the pain.”
Resistance has intensified accordingly.\nWildcat strikes in Bangladesh hav
e periodically crippled the garment\nindustry there\, as workers demand sa
fety improvements and back wages.\nProtesters in Romania have held huge de
monstrations against\ngovernment-imposed austerity measures. The entire co
untry of Greece has\nbeen virtually ungovernable since the riots over the
police murder of a\n15-year old in December 2008. Riots\, general strikes
and insurrection are\ncommon occurrences. Farmers blockade the Bulgarian b
order with their\ntractors and banners are dropped from the Acropolis. The
announcement in\nApril that the Greek government would be instituting aus
terity measures as\npart of an IMF/European Union bank bailout sent 200\,0
00 protesters into\nthe streets in Athens alone.\n\nHere in the US\, groun
d zero for neoliberalism\, reaction to the financial\ncollapse has been co
mparatively muted. Recent protests have not approached\nthe size and inten
sity of those of the antiglobalization era. The IMF\nResistance Network ex
ists to help change that. We are an East coast-based\nantiauthoritarian gr
oup dedicated to organizing demonstrations against IMF\nand World Bank sum
mit meetings in Washington\, DC. The next one is on\nOctober 9 – 11 of t
his year.\n\nYou’re all invited. Details will follow shortly.\n\nSee you

oct10\n\nThe Top 10 Ideas For 10/10/10:\n\nHave ideas to contribute to thi
 s list? E-mail them to WorkIdeas@350.org\n\n#1 Organize a Tree Planting\n
\nPlanting trees is fun\, friendly\, and a great way to engage the communi
ty. And each one you plant will be a little carbon-sequestering machine f
or years to come. Try to shoot for planting 350 trees or more in one day!
 \n\n \n\n \n\n\n#2 Go Solar\n\nWorking on a solar project is a great way t
o demonstrate the clean energy future right in your community. Whether it
s installing a solar panel on a local school\, building a solar cooker for
your community\, or putting a solar hot water heater on your house--it is
a great way to work with the planet\, not against it.\n\n \n\n#3 Work on
a Community Garden or an Organic Farm\n\nTo get to 350\, we\\'ll need to r
ethink the way we produce food on the planet--moving away from industrial
agriculture powered by fossil fuels\, and towards small-scale\, local\, or
ganic farming. Think about using your work party as a day to model this ne
w system--maybe you can break ground on a new community garden. Or simply
help out harvesting at a local farm. For more info\, visit 350.org/foodan
 dfarm\n \n\n \n#4 Go For a Ride:\n\nBiking is a great way to get out and b
e visible in your community. It also demonstrate the need for improved inf
rastructure for our alternative modes of transportation. Think about setti
ng up a bike repair workshop\, or painting bike lanes in your community.
Maybe an awareness ride of 350 miles (or kilometers) if you\\'re feeling a
bit more ambitious?\n\n \n\n\n#5 Harness the Wind\n\nA local wind project
can show that you\\'re serious about building the clean energy economy.
Putting up a turbine is a big project though\, so you\\'ll want to start p
 lanning this one early...\n\n \n\n \n\n \n\n#6 Get Efficient:\n\nEnergy Ef
ficiency is often considered \\'low hanging fruit\\' when it comes to redu
cing carbon emissions. It\\'s often easier and cheaper than installing re
newable energy\, so why not start here? Whether it\\'s installing more eff
icient LED or CFL lightbulbs in your MPs office\, insulating your basement
\, weatherizing your church or temple\, or doing an energy audit on your s
chool\, efficiency can help get us on the path to 350 as soon as humanly p
ossible. (This is also likely one of the easiest ways to reduce emissions
really fast -- like 10% in 2010 as our friends at the 10:10 campaign are
helping folks to do).\n\n \n\n#7 Start a Transition Town\n\n\\'The Transit
ion Towns\\' project is designed to equip communities for the dual challen
ges of climate change and peak oil. By raising awareness of sustainable li
ving and building local resilience in the near future\, making your commun
ity a \\'transition town\\' can provide a solid framework for sustained ac
tion at the local level. There is even a whole existing network of communi
ties working as Transition towns that you can connect with to learn what t
hey are doing: http://www.transitiontowns.org.\n \n\n#8 Faith Work: Connec
tions between the world\\'s diverse religions and the issue of global warm
ing are numerous and strike a strong moral chord. This is a great way to g
ather people together who already have a community in which they discuss t
he big questions -- now is the chance to add global warming to the list an
d harness the network to start working on the solutions.\n\n \n\n#9 Trash
Clean Up: Sadly\, some of our iconic places aren’t as pristine as we’d
like. Why not leave the place better than you found it? By recycling the
garbage you find\, you can ensure that the embedded energy in the product
s gets reused--instead of decomposing over the years and sending a stready
stream of greenhouse gas into the atmosphere.\n\n \n\n#10 Join the 10:10
Campaign: Our friends at 10:10 Global are working an ambitious project: un
iting different sectors of society behind the simple idea that by working
together we can achieve a 10% cut in carbon emissions in a single year\, s
tarting in 2010. Their focus is on immediate\, practical action--350.org\
\'s focus is on uniting local actions for systemic change on a global leve
 l. 350.org and 10:10 are working hand in hand in 2010\, and we couldn\\'t
be happier about the partnerhsip- Geographical Scope: International
