DESCRIPTION:Last academic year saw the first Cinemayaat Middle East Film Fe
stival\, which was well received at Evergreen\, and the greater Olympia co
mmunity. Our overall mission is to dispel stereotypes of the Middle East\,
Muslims\, and Arabs\, and expand understanding of the complexity of the M

queer issues to guide our choices\, we presented engaging documentaries\,
feature films\, shorts and speakers\, all free of charge.\n\nThis November
look forward to an exciting return of ‘Cinemayaat’ to the Evergreen State
College campus. We are using our previous themes\, but there is plenty ne
w material (as well as return of a favorite short “Planet of the Arabs”).
SESAME will be screening over 12 new films and bringing an array of incred

DESCRIPTION:A CALL TO ACTION\n \nDespite our best efforts\, somehow we find
ourselves having to bear four more years of the Bush administration. Our
country will again be used as a tool to wage war and environmental destru
 ction. Racism\, sexism\, poverty\, education\, oil dependencey\, unemploy
ment\, health care and the hundreds of other issues that many of us care a
bout deeply will again be pushed aside. It's enough to make anyone curl u
p in a ball and watch television\, hoping it will all go away. \n \nThat'
s what the Bush administration is counting on. \n \n It's time to come o
ut of our disappointment\, anger and despair. It's time to come out of ou
r homes. Now more than ever\, we need to remember that we are still here.
We are still working to create the world in which we want to live. We n
eed to look at each other\, express our terror and fear for the future and
find ways to remember what we are fighting for. We need to send the mess
age loud and clear that we will not go away and we will not give up. Now
is the time to exercise our civil liberties and show our dissent. \n \nOn
Thursday\, January 20\, 2005\, George W. Bush will be inaugurated as pres
ident of the United States. For the millions of us who believe in peace a
nd justice\, it is a perfect time to renew our commitment to resist this a
dministration and its deadly policies of war and greed. We will not give
Bush a mandate and we will not support his destructive agenda. \n \nFor
us\, this day will not be business as usual. We will join millions of ot
her protesters all over the world in the streets of Portland to let Bush\,
the media and each other know that we are still here. There are more of
us than we can possibly imagine. We will not cooperate silently.\n \nPlea
se join us for a protest march beginning at 4pm. We will meet at Portland
's North Park blocks downtown\, W Burnside and Park St\, and march to seve
ral locations including the Oregonian\, the Forest Service Headquarters\,
and the FBI building. Please bring signs\, costumes\, banners\, puppets\,
drums and your voices. There will also be various activities after the m
arch sponsored by other peace and justice groups. There will be two art p
arties on the weekend prior to the action at the Cascadia Rising Infoshop
on 16th and Clinton\, Saturday Jan 15th from 11am-4pm and Sunday Jan 16th
 from 12-6pm. Please bring paper\, cardboard tubes\, paint\, markers and o
ther art supplies to use and donate. \n \nWe're aware that one day of pr
otest will not change the world. Please come ready to network with your p
rojects and groups or with a curiousity about what other people are involv
ed in. Let's show Bush and Co. that our movement is energized\, mobilized
and determined. Let's connect with each other\, knowing that we can't pu
t our allies through too fine a sieve in times like these. We are still h

DESCRIPTION:Free Democracy Summit: A Weekend of Art\, Inspiration and Educa
tion\nDuluth's second annual Free Democracy Summit (April 22-24) seeks to
address this question among many others. Organized by the University of Mi
nnesota Duluth's chapter of the Minnesota Public Interest Group (MPIRG)\,
the summit sets out to explore and inspire citizen participation in Americ
an Democracy and grassroots activism.\n\n This years Summit is focused on
interpreting Thomas Jefferson's famous phrase: “life\, liberty\, and the p
ursuit of happiness” means to individual citizens. For instance\, if “life
” is an inalienable right then doesn't that mean we are all entitled to ad
equate healthcare? \nThe weekend is broken up into three aspects: art\, ed
ucation and inspiration. Artists from around Minnesota have submitted poli
tically charged art to inspire thought and conversation. Our panel discuss
ions are the key to the weekend. We have topics ranging from Christianity
in democracy to alternative healthcare. And finally\, our keynote speakers
are meant to inspire. \n\nThe Free Democracy Summit will be kicked off on
  Friday April 22 at the Duluth YWCA (202 W. 2nd St.\, Duluth). Starting a
t 5:30 pm\, the FDS opening ceremonies will feature inspiring speakers. A

DESCRIPTION:Dear Friend\,\n \nThere have been many declarations of victory
in recent weeks -- with the \nsigning of the peace agreement in Abuja and
the launch of the United \nNations (UN) assessment mission that could pave
the way for a UN \npeacekeeping mission in Darfur -- but the fact is that
the only change \non the ground in Darfur is that things are getting wors
 e. It is time for \nus to take to the streets again to let decision-makers
know that we will \nnot be silent until the genocide stops. Join us at th
e White House on \nJune 20th.\n \nAfrica Action has been monitoring the pe
ace agreement signed between the \nGovernment of Sudan and one of the Darf
ur rebel factions. The UN has \ntaken the first step towards a possible fu
ture peacekeeping mission by \nauthorizing a UN assessment team that is li
kely leaving this week. The \nUN Security Council is also in Sudan this we
ek to continue to pressure \nthe Sudanese government to accept a UN missio
n to support the work of \nthe African Union on the ground.\n \nThese are
all positive first steps\, but unfortunately\, the Sudanese \ngovernment a
nd their proxy militia\, the Janjaweed\, have already violated \nthe peace
agreement on several occasions by attacking villages and camps \nfor inte
rnally displaced people. With the breaking of the ceasefire\, it \nis clea
r that this peace agreement is fragile at best. Any hope for a \nnew and m
ore substantive agreement signed by all parties rests on a UN \npeacekeepi
ng mission being deployed to protect the people and create a \nsafe passag
e for humanitarian aid thereby fostering a climate of \nsecurity that is c
onducive to lasting peace. For more analysis on the \ndeal please read our
latest policy statement and our campaign update at \nwww.africaaction.org
.\n \nThe linchpin to achieving a multilateral intervention continues to b
e \nthe United States. The U.S. has special leverage with each of the key
\nstakeholders and will be the most powerful and persuasive voice in \ndec
isions about troop size\, mandate and the speed of deployment. While \nthe
Bush Administration has been on record in support of a UN \nintervention\
, we hear from our sources that the U.S. has failed to do \nthe diplomatic
heavy lifting required to secure peace in Darfur. We have \nthe power to
protect the people of Darfur\, but will we use it?\n \nAs a movement\, we
demonstrated our size in the rallies and marches over \nthe past several m
onths\, but it is easy for the Bush Administration to \nthink that we are
just voicing support for what they are already doing. \nWe have never been
better poised to make change than at this moment\, but \ntoo many people
think that\, with the signing of the Abuja deal\, the \ngenocide is all bu
t resolved. Please help us to set the story straight \nby taking to the st
reets to stop genocide in Darfur.\n \nAfrica Action will host an action at
the White House on World Refugee \nDay\, June 20th at noon in Lafayette P
ark (16th and H St. NW). \n \nWe invite you to join us and to wear black o
r dark clothing. At 1:00 PM\, after hearing rousing speakers and raising o
ur voices for the people of Darfur we will walk to the White House fence a
nd enact a 'die-in'\, where willing participants will be asked to lie down
to symbolize the rising death toll in Darfur and eastern Chad and to call
for a greater international response to protect people.\n \nWe will not r
isk arrest in this non-violent action\, and those who choose not to partic
ipate in this part of the program can stay in solidarity in Lafayette Park
. Let us know if you have any questions. Please help us to spread the word
. Together we can let the White House know that we are watching and calli
ng for the Bush Administration to move beyond rhetoric to achieve results
in Darfur.\n \nThank you for your continued commitment to the people of Da
rfur -- and your vigilance in this campaign.\n \nSincerely\,\nThe Staff at

the Pittsburgh August 6 Committee\, an ad-hoc coalition of groups and ind
ividuals who have come together to organize an anti-war\, anti-nuke and gl
obal justice convergence on the anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombings of
Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The convening groups are as follows:\n\n    Aboli
tion 2000 W PA Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons\n    American Friends S
ervice Committee Pittsburgh\n    CodePink Pittsburgh\n    Duncan and Porte
r House of Hospitality\n    Physicians for Social Responsibility (Pittsbur
gh)\n    Roots of Promise\n    Rosenberg Institute for Peace and Justice\n
School of the Americas Watch of Western PA\n    Thomas Merton Center A
nti-War Committee\n    Womens League for International Peace and Freedom (
PIttsburgh)\n\nWHY BECHTEL?\n\nBechtel\, one of the richest private corpor
ations\, helps develop nuclear weapons\, pushed for war with Iraq\, and ha
s created ecological and economic havoc in countries across the globe. Bec
htel 'connects the dots' for the anti-war\, anti-nuke and global justice m
ovements: Through its sordid corporate history and 100 years of revolving-
door relationships with government\, Bechtel illustrates the connections b
etween profiteering and war\, between nuclear power and nuclear weapons pr
oliferation\, between 'free trade' and the exploitation of indigenous peop
les\, and between corporate power-brokers and decision-makers at the highe
st levels of government.\n\nThe focus of the Three River's August protest
is the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory\, a joint Navy and Department of Ene
rgy facility located in West Mifflin for which Bechtel has a $4.2 billion
dollar contract to operate.  From developing reactors for the first ballis
tic missile submarine\, the first commercial nuclear power plant\, and the
next generation of aircraft carriers\, Bettis 'exists to support this nat
ion's capability to deploy and maintain a modern nuclear navy.'\n\nThe Uni
ted States is the ONLY country that has used nuclear weapons in war. As th
e war continues in Iraq\, and as the Bush Administration foments a nuclear
crisis in Iran at the same time it pushes for more nuclear power plants a
nd nuclear weapons here at home\, we must say NO to nukes\, NO to wars\, N
O to profiteers. Geographical Scope: Metro
