DESCRIPTION:Ball State University?s first four Greening of the Campus confe
 rences in 1996\, 1997\, 1999\, and 2001 each attracted 200 participants fr
om about 30 states and a few foreign countries for a dynamic international
exchange of ideas on environmental concerns. Greening of the Campus V pro
vides a new opportunity to further explore the critical issues\, problems\
, and solutions we still face on our campuses and in our world. We invite
and encourage your participation in\nthis global gathering September 18?20
\, 2003.\n\n Overview\nThis interdisciplinary conference allows people rep
resenting diverse areas in university communities to share information on
environmental issues. These areas range from the practical day-to-day mana
gement of the physical plant to ?green? curriculum development and ?green?
utilization of campus resources. The areas are bound by common concerns f
or achieving environmental soundness through safe and sane management of r
esources. The campus community can become a ?green? model for society as a
whole by gathering and sharing this information. Top of Page\n\n Why Part
icipate?\nParticipation in the conference can help you and your institutio
n\, company\, or organization:\nUnderstand the potential for university an
d college campuses to influence the environmental impact of campus resourc
es.\n\nBegin a strategy for viewing college and university campuses in a s
ystems context.\n\nLearn about emerging environmental curricula in a varie

tended.?\n?2001 Participant\n?I learned that other universities are making
good progress toward sustainability\, which is inspiring even if my own u
niversity has a long way to go.?\n?2001 Participant\n?The conference is gr
eat. I am always looking for ways and ideas on how to\nimprove the environ
mental stewardship of the campus.?\n?2001 Participant\n\n Vital Link\nOur
society needs ideas and actions that enhance the environmental health and
integrity of the places where we live and work. Educational institutions a
re complex human communities that pose unique opportunities to explore\, u
nderstand\, and respond to the interrelationship of environmental issues.
College and university campuses can be a vital link bridging current commu
nity needs and understandings with future visions.\n?Greening? directly in
fluences every aspect of human culture. It impacts economic\, political\,
technical\, philosophical\, and cognitive practices in a complex interwea
ving of ideas and actions.\nManagement of environmental resources on colle
ge and university campuses can have long-term effects on the institutions
themselves and on society as a whole. This is a unique opportunity to shar
e effective ideas on environmental issues. \n\nPaper Sessions: Papers sele
cted from abstracts submitted as a result of this call for papers will be
presented in moderated sessions.\nPoster Sessions: Posters selected from s
ubmitted abstracts will be presented at the conference.\nPlenary Sessions:

DESCRIPTION:National Conference Announcement and Call to Action \nAll Out F
 or Milwaukee: October 10 ? 12\, 2003 \n\nThe 180/Movement for Democracy an
d Education\, in conjunction with Education for the People! in Milwaukee w
ill host the: \n\nDemocracy and Education Conference \nOctober 10th-12th\,
  2003 \nUniversity of Wisconsin-Milwaukee \nMilwaukee\, Wisconsin\, U.$.A.
\n\nNational March on the Bradley Foundation's Headquarters! \n---Buildi
ng Local Democracy and Dignified Public Education For All \n---Against the
Corporate Agenda for Education! \nSaturday\, October 11th @ the Lynde and
  Bradley Foundation Headquarters \nMilwaukee\, Wisconsin\, U.$.A. \n\nE-ma
il our national office or call 501-244-2439 for more info. \n\n'WHAT'S THI
 S ALL ABOUT?' \nAs students\, workers\, teachers\, and community folks who
need and are affected by a flourishing system of education\, we must be u
nited in common struggle to make that system more democratic and accessibl
 e. Standing in our way\, corporations are moving steadily and strategical
ly to colonize our schools\, colleges\, and universities using their econo
mic and political influence to pull strings within campus administrations\
, state legislatures\, the federal government and other chambers of local
and global power. Education\, a potential well of democracy\, is becoming
  instead a source of conformity\, profits\, discrimination\, and corporate
control as schools are increasingly used as tools for the consolidation o
f corporate domination instead of civic engagement and human progression.
  \n\nThe Democracy and Education Conference\, October 10-12 in Milwaukee\,
Wisconsin will challenge the corporate agenda for education. It will pro
vide a forum to discuss campus campaigns and strategies and gain strength
from our common struggle. It will be a great chance to interact with peop
le from across the US and North America who are engaged in the movement fo
r democracy and education. \n\nIf you are fighting for universal access to
education\, the right to organize\, civil rights and diversity\, public-w
elfare research/technology\, democratic curriculum\, institutional social
responsibility\, and/or democratic and progressive campus governance then
you need to be in Milwaukee October 10-12! \n\nAN INTERCONNECTED\, 'K-16'
MOVEMENT \nOur organizing is bringing us closer to the realization that th
e push for the corporate takeover of colleges and universities is being dr
iven by the same clique of corporate tycoons and right-wing ideologues as
in primary and secondary schools. \nHigher education corporatization\, ex
emplified by: collegiate ventures with large corporations\, the creation o
f research parks\, increased corporate and political control over research
\, use of temporary and contingent labor\, and university administrators a
s paid corporate board members\; aligns perfectly with plans for K-12 priv
atization such as: school choice plans (voucher systems\, charter schools)
\, comprehensive school designs based on business principles (such as econ
omies of scale\, standardization\, cost efficiency\, production line strat
egies)\, back to basics curricula\, teacher pay based on test scores\, and
strong systems of 'accountability.' \n\nEach of these schemes was dreame
d up by and benefit the corporate sector by taking control and function of
education away from its direct beneficiaries (students\, teachers\, worke
rs\, and the community around it) and moves it into the hands of the busin
ess elite who can fund it and benefit for a more sorted and streamlined po
ol of graduates to enter into their workforces. One of the biggest movers
behind this drive for corporatization is the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foun
dation. \n\nRise Up! As we move forward with our local struggles\, we hav
e made a call for a national march on the Bradley Foundation (Oct. 10-12).
Throughout the country the response has resonated with local struggles f
or racial\, social\, and economic justice. We will expose and challenge t
he neo-conservative and neo-liberal agenda wherever it is working to maint
ain and benefit from the oppression of our communities. October 10 - 12 i
s around the corner and your participation is crucial in these efforts. \n
\nIt is imperative that we move forward\, united in creating a K-16 respon
se to the corporate threat to all of education. \n\nMORE ON THE BRADLEY FO
UNDATION: \nSince 1985 Milwaukee has been taken under siege by the wealthi
est and most influential right-wing think tank in the country. Currently\
, there is a coalition to oppose the racist and economically destructive a
genda of the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation (LHBF). And no\, we don't
need the Allen-Bradley clock tower to know what time it is. \n\nAs we co
ntinue the campaign to stop institutional racism and promote economic deve
lopment in our city\, we will expose the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundatio
n's economic agenda in Milwaukee and provide an alternative to Bradley's r
ight wing social and educational experiments that are carried out in our c
ity. \nTo the city\, the Bradley Foundation has left us with the poverty
enhancement program known as W-2\, a gutted public educational system thro
ugh school vouchers and privatization schemes\, and public silence and com
plicity through massive buyouts to many political figures\, non-profit and
faith-based organizations. The LHBF\, acting in the best interests of Wh
ite Supremacy and Corporate Greed\, has achieved for itself top advisory s
pots to the Bush Administration's education and work agenda and is central
to creating and implementing policies that are direct attacks on communit
ies of color. \n\nTo its corporate criminal allies\, the LHBF has given t
housands of low wage workers and in many cases free labor. These private
interests profit off of the racist sanctions\, limited educational access\
, and lack of rights on the job. Through Bradley's attack on public educa
tion\, Bradley can reassure the private sector that they will have a const
ant supply of low-skilled Black and Latino laborers. \n\nTo the city\, th
e LHBF tried to create the political reality of Charles Murray's book The
Bell Curve\, to which the foundation paid Murray 160\,000 a year to write.
The book and the foundation espouse the idea that Blacks and Latinos are
by nature\, inferior\, and therefore will 'congregate to the lower-classe
s of society.' According to the LHBF mentality\, they (we) are 'meant' to
work in low-wage jobs and attend inferior public schools. This is unaccep
table. \n\nThe time has come to say enough to the further deterioration o
f the City at the hands of the Bradley foundation. To stand for justice a
nd participation in our local democracy. To fight for economic Justice an
d stand against the racist agenda of the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundatio
 n. \n\nSee you in Milwaukee\, October 10-12! Geographical Scope: Nation

DESCRIPTION:Never before have we as Americans faced such a serious challeng
e to our liberties. The USA PATRIOT Act was passed on October 26\, 2001 in
direct response to the events of September 11. The provisions of the USA
PATRIOT Act directly attack the Bill of Rights and the Constitution. Now t
he Justice Department is presenting PATRIOT Act II (the Domestic Security
Enhancement Act) that will even further erode our rights. No matter what is
sues you advocate for\, no matter what your cause\, we face in common a th
reat to our right to advocate\, to organize\, and to exercise our civil li

DESCRIPTION:The Student Peace Action Network will launch its new campaign\,
Flunk the War Machine\, with a coordinated Week of Action on October 26-3
1\, 2003. We invite students and youth nationwide to take part in our camp
aign\, which focuses on the military's infiltration of high schools and un
iversities by exposing and challenging:\n\n· The USA PATRIOT Act's assault
on students' civil liberties \n· Pentagon programs and weapons contractor
s' ties to college campuses\n· The No Child Left Behind Act's military rec
ruitment provision\n\nThe Week of Action will raise awareness about these
critical issues through education and action. We encourage students to pre
sent letters to their school's administration demanding that they:\n\n· De
velop policies to protect their students\, staff and faculty against the P
ATRIOT Act.\n· Break ties with weapons manufactures and Pentagon programs
on their campus.\n· Defend student's privacy against aggressive military r
ecruiters by adopting an opt-in notification system for the release of s
tudent's personal information.\n\nIf your group is working to demilitarize
your school\, we invite you to join SPAN's Flunk the War Machine campaign

AN is also calling for your support of the October 30th National 'Take Aff
irmative Action' Day\, which is sponsored by the NAACP Youth & College Div
ision and the United States Student Association. As student and youth peac
e activists\, we realize that the fight against violence and militarism is
inextricably linked to the struggle for racial\, gender and economic just
ice. Racist and sexist policies in our schools restrict entry for women an
d people of color\, yet the political Right is targeting affirmative actio
n programs for rollback and destruction. Now\, more than ever\, we must ca
ll on our college administrators and lawmakers to support and advance affi
rmative action policies in higher education. Tell our schools to promote j
ustice and education\, not war and discrimination!\n\nThe following excerp

s Chief Justice Rehquist was circulating the opinion that would have gutte

on the US Supreme Court. The addition of even one more anti-choice Justice

***************************\n BHOPAL DAY OF ACTION IDEAS:\n**************
*****************\n\n**Dress up as the Grim Reaper and paint Dow's symbol
on your back. Sneak around campus and 'collect' students throughout the da
 y. \n\n**Sketch chalk outlines around campus and write the names of Bhopal
victims inside. Or pile 'body bags' around your Dow building or your coll
ege green.\n\n**Build a Dow 'piñata' out of wire mesh and paper mache and
invite the campus to break it open. Build the piñata in the shape of a fac
tory or a stack of bills\, and paint the Dow logo on its sides. Then have
everyone take a swing at it with a broom (an Indian jhadoo\, if possible--
in India\, to be hit with a jhadoo is a great insult). Design the piñata t
o break open at the bottom\, and fill it with chemical slime\, blood and b
ones\, or stink bombs. Be sure to have plenty of candy for those who take
a swing\, so that no one goes away disappointed.\n\n**Dress up as Dow exec
utives and 'seize' a nearby cemetery. Claim that the dead are your 'intell
ectual property\,' as demonstrated by Agent Orange\, DDT\, Napalm and Bhop
al. Invite the media--they'll love the spectacle!\n\n**Build a Dow Haunted
House for Halloween. Make the Haunted House educational\, but scary too--
perhaps this is another venue for the Dow Grim Reaper to stalk his victims
. \n\n**Borrow a projector and design a skull and crossbones slide. Then p
roject it onto your campus Dow building (if you have one). \n\n**Dramatize
the gas leak with toxic waste barrels and foaming dry ice. We did this tw
ice at the University of Michigan\, and it captured a lot of attention. Fo
 r photos\, see www.umich.edu/~bhopal/DiagReenact.htm.\n\n**Stage a die-in
or a funeral procession on your campus green. Ask the marching band to par
ticipate.\n\n**Create a 'Bhopal Brigade' and dress up in biohazard suits.
Stand guard outside the Dow Building to protect Dow's chemicals from terro
rist attack. Or act as a 'chemical bodyguard' for Dow Board member. Contac
t Ryan to request the biohazard suits.\n Geographical Scope: National

DESCRIPTION:The Coalition Against Environmental Racism 9th Annual Conferenc
e\n\n Environmental Racism is the exclusion of people of color in the dec
ision-making process and the disproportionate impact of environmental haza
 rds\, including pollution\, resource depletion\, and waste disposal\, on t
he health and wealth of people of color. Rising from the grassroots\, the
environmental justice movement has responded by demanding that low-income
and politically powerless communities not be subject to this unequal dist
ribution of risks and burdens. The Coalition Against Environmental Racism
  is\, by its name\, necessarily a diverse coalition. CAER is a student-ba
sed group dedicated to providing a forum for education and organization to
promote environmental justice. CAER brings together the community and st
udents from the Survival Center\, Multicultural Center\, ethnic student un
ions\, and the Law School - organizations that have not all traditionally
worked together.\n\n We believe that neither social inequities nor envi
ronmental problems will be solved unless we begin to understand them as fu
ndamentally linked. The goal is to educate people at the University and i
n the community about the connections between environmental\, health\, and
social inequities\, and to build community capacity to achieve justice.
The primary vehicle towards this goal is the annual environmental justice
conference\, which is held on the University of Oregon campus. The confer

join us for this exciting and historic conference!\n\nAbout Physicians fo
r Human Rights\nPhysicians for Human Rights (PHR) is a member organization
committed to promoting health by protecting human rights. Founded in 1986
\, PHR makes two unique contributions to the human rights movement. First\
, we bring the skills of science and medicine to human rights investigatio
 ns\, pioneering the use of anthropology\, pathology\, epidemiology and a h
ost of other disciplines as tools for human rights investigations. Our pop
ulation-based assessments of women&#8217\;s health and violence against wo
men\, tools for assessing landmines injuries\, and other scientific produc
ts have illuminated human rights concerns that show their scope and breadt
 h. Our International Forensic Program serves the cause of international ju
stice. \n\nSecond\, we engage and mobilize health professionals so that th
ey become a powerful voice for human rights in their practices\, their cou
ntries and internationally. In 1997\, PHR was one of the co-recipients of
the Nobel Peace Prize for helping to create the International Campaign to
Ban Landmines. Traditionally\, health professionals have not been a strong
constituency for equity in health\, but through training\, outreach\, and
support\, PHR is creating such a constituency &#8211\; and it is one that
\, when mobilized\, speaks with great and compelling authority to policy-m
akers. Whether advocacy is directed toward the release of imprisoned colle
agues\, to end torture\, or to protect women&#8217\;s rights\, or to seek
a more just health system\, physicians\, nurses\, and public health profes
sionals bring the prestige and credibility of the health professions to th
e cause of human rights. \n\nAs part of this initiative\, we have develope
d a sophisticated program to engage medical\, public health and nursing st
udents in health and human rights advocacy as part of their professional t
raining. PHR now supports more than 60 student chapters in schools of medi
cine\, nursing and public health around the nation which organize a myriad
of health and human rights related events\, activities and actions on cam
pus each year. At the national level\, PHR provides support in event organ
izing\, creates campaign materials and policy updates\, organizes leadersh
ip trainings\, and coordinates activities for student leaders to participa
te in &#8211\; like national call-in days\, national weeks of action\, and
national conferences. In general\, the PHR student program seeks to promo
te health and human rights activism and social engagement as an ethic valu
e in the students&#8217\; health professional field. Geographical Scope:

DESCRIPTION:COOL and Action Without Borders – Idealist.org are excited to a
nnounce that the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia) will host the 2
004 COOL Idealist National Conference\, to be held March 12-14\, 2004. The
COOL Idealist Conference is the largest gathering in the nation of colleg
 e students\, campus administrators\, and nonprofit organizations engaged i
n making a positive impact through civic engagement. We expect to convene
2\,000 students and participants this March\, also marking the 20th annual
event. With a dynamic focus on student leadership through service\, activ
ism\, and politics and the intersections of student engagement with the br
oader nonprofit community and avenues for making a lifelong contribution t
o our world\, this conference will surely not be one to miss.\n\nThe Unive
rsity of Pennsylvania (Penn) is a historic\, Ivy League campus located in
downtown Philadelphia. Home to a diverse undergraduate student body of nea
rly 10\,000 that hail from every state in the union and all around the glo
be\, Penn also offers top-ranking academic programs\, consistently among t
he top 10 universities in the annual U.S. News & World Report survey. With
a history of innovation in interdisciplinary education and scholarship\,
Penn is also well known for the quality and innovation of its campus-commu
nity partnerships. The Center for Community Partnerships sponsors a divers
e array of local initiatives focused on West Philadelphia\, spanning every
thing from tutoring to neighborhood economic development. One program\, th
e Philadelphia Higher Education Network for Neighborhood Development (PHEN
ND)\, involves more than forty institutions of higher education in the gre
ater Philadelphia area in building the capacity of member institutions to
 develop mutually beneficial\, sustained\, and democratic community-based s
ervice learning partnerships. Another institution called Civic House focus
es on student training and leadership development\, promoting mutually ben
eficial collaborations between the university and the West Philadelphia co
mmunity and beyond. Students and staff in these and other Penn programs wi
ll play key leadership roles in the conference\, sharing their models with
the nation.\n\nThis conference also will formally celebrate both COOL’s 2
0th convening and the inauguration of the Idealist on Campus program\, a r
esult of the recent merger between COOL and Idealist. Idealist on Campus c
 onnects\, educates\, and mobilizes students\, campuses\, and communities t
o build a world where people can live free and dignified lives\, echoing C
OOL’s legacy and the mission of Action Without Borders-Idealist.org on the
campus level. In addition to the national conference\, this year’s offeri
ngs will include a plethora of resources for civic engagement and socially
responsible careers (to be delivered online at www.idealistoncampus.org).
Among those resources will be a comprehensive civic engagement curriculum
\, nonprofit career guides and resources\, and interactive resources that
support local coalitions of students\, staff\, and others to build cross-c
utting Alliances for civic engagement and socially responsible careers.\n\
nAs COOL celebrates its 20th conference\, we will also celebrate the emerg
ing role of Idealist as it expands its resources for college students and
campus service and activism. In addition to the campus programs\, Idealist
offers an impressive array of resources including: a web-based community
of more than 37\,000 nonprofits and 150\,000 individuals\, sites for Teach
ers and for Kids and Teens\, and versions of Idealist in Spanish\, French\
, and Russian. This year\, Idealist was recognized by Time Magazine as the
best web site for information on volunteering. Tapping into these expande
d areas\, the COOL Idealist Conference will enhance the Opportunities Fair
\, the range of workshops\, and the focus on post-graduate opportunities f
or students.\n\nIn addition\, with an aim for making this year’s conferenc
e one of the most fantastic\, program offerings will include:\n\n• A mini-
conference of COOL’s Learning the Lessons from Social Movements Summit bui
lt into the larger conference\, featuring a day-long Friday Forum and doze
ns of workshops focusing on the civil rights movement\, women’s movement\,
environmental movement\, and other areas.\n\n• An expanded track for Camp
us Administrators\, including a day-long Friday Forum and workshops on top

DESCRIPTION:Build support for the Books Not Bombs Agenda:\n\n*Funding for E
ducation\, Not Empire\nWe demand the immediate restoration of all funds fo
r public schools and universities cut from local and federal budgets over
the last three years\, and the reversal of all tuition hikes in the same p
eriod. We demand dramatic increases in assistance to low-income youth thro
ugh Pell Grants\, TRIO\, and all programs for students in need. We demand
the repeal of the No Child Left Behind Act's high-stakes testing regime\,
and of the Higher Education Act's denial of federal aid to drug offenders.
And we demand that Congress pass legislation (like the DREAM Act) to exte
nd educational opportunities to all immigrant youth.\n\n*No Military Recru
itment in Our Schools\nCollege administrations should support the ongoing
legal challenge to the Solomon Amendment\, and both colleges and high scho
ols should make it campus policy to prominently advertise the rights of st
udents and parents to opt out of having student information released to mi
litary recruiters.\n\n*Respect our Civil Liberties\nProvisions that violat
e youth and students rights in the Patriot Act must be revised\, and schoo
l student unions and administrations should pass resolutions to oppose its
implementation on campus.\n\n*Campuses for Peace\, Not War\nCampus admini
strators must publicly disclose all military-related research and all fina
ncial relationships with weapons manufacturers. Campus administrators mus
t pledge to work towards severing these relationships and agree to a free
ze on any new military research or additional dealings with weapons manufa
cturers.\n\n*Schools not Jails\nCollege administrators must divulge all un
iversity business relations--including contracts and investments--with com
panies that profit from or finance prison \nconstruction or operations. C
ollege administrations should set up recruitment and retention programs fo
r communities adversely affected by incarceration\, specifically low-incom
e youth and youth of color. Lastly\, state governments must invest more mo
ney in education and rehabilitation programs instead of prioritizing incar

DESCRIPTION:Participate in democracy! \n\n Help guarantee your basic
right as an American voter!! Hi\, my name is Lisa Dangutis. I am running a
national student campaign for an organization called Verified Voting and
we need your help!!!! One of Verified Voting&#8217\;s urgent goals is to g
et the federal legislation H.R.2239/S.1980 enacted. These are identical bi
lls\, one in the House and one in the Senate\, which would do a lot to ens
ure fair elections in November of this year &#8211\; and the future. They
require a voter-verifiable paper record on all voting equipment\, and they
require voting machine vendors to open their source code to public scruti
ny. \n\n Currently\, electronic voting machines are not required to pr
oduce a paper record that the voter can verify\, so there is no way to kno
w the votes were recorded correctly and no way to do a meaningful recount.
This means that when you vote\, your vote might not count in the next ele
ction &#8211\; and you would never even know. Can you imagine an election
in which your vote will not count? \n\n On February 25\, 2004\, Verifie
dVoting is planning a national day of student action. We are asking studen
t groups from major universities and colleges across the US to participate
in stopping unverifiable voting. Here&#8217\;s what you can do: \n\n1.) D
ownload the petition from the VerifiedVoting website and print plenty of c
opies. The petition is here: www.verifiedvoting.org/resources/documents/st
udentpetition.pdf\n\n2.) Get as many students as possible to sign the peti
tions by tabling on February 25\, 2004.\n\n3.)Attach a letter from your un
iversity organization to congress with the petitions stating your opinion
as well. This way Congress is aware of each university and organization pa
rticipating. \n\n4. ) Mail the petitions and letters back to: \n Li

DESCRIPTION:SFT's 2004 national Convergence\, to be hosted in Santa Cruz\,
California from February 13th-16th\, 2004\, will focus both on stimulating
new\, effective organizing\, and better coordinating and reinforcing exis
ting activism within the U.S. Fair Trade student movement.\n\nAs USFT ente
rs its second year\, a regional structure will be introduced that lends to
a more intimate and persistent relationship between member schools and th
e national organization. The Convergence will act as a starting block for
regional campaigns across North America\, facilitated by USFT representati
ves that have built successful initiatives at their home universities.\n\n
A primary objective will be to establish mechanisms that insure the sustai
nability and development of student organizations that form around Fair Tr
ade. While emphasis will be placed on raising demand for Fair Trade produc
ts through increasing the number of campuses conducting active campaigns\,
there will be a concerted effort to invite unusual suspects to the table—
that is\, universities and individuals not traditionally inclined to engag
e global justice issues. Fair Trade is a practical and powerful point of e
ntry for many young activists\, and offers a valuable opportunity for shap
ing the next generation of the Global Justice Movement.\n\nIn collaboratio
n with experienced allies in the non-profit and for-profit sectors\, USFT
will produce an interactive\, workshop-based conference that will serve as
an important venue for sharing best practices and creative mediums for ra
ising consciousness amongst students and consumers. Preliminary research a
nd an extensive outreach effort will identify a diverse participant pool c

DESCRIPTION:Global climate change is already affecting vulnerable communiti
es around the world. Those most adversely affected are disadvantaged com
munities who have contributed the least to global climate change but will
bear the largest burden\, and lack resources to either prevent or adapt to
climate change. Policies to address this situation are lacking at all lev
els (local\, national\, regional\, and global)\, yet some efforts have bee
n made to move towards climate justice. Of note are the Environmental Ju
stice and Global Climate Change Initiative\, a coalition of non-government
al organizations (NGOs) and activists that have organized international cl
imate summits and developed the Principles of Climate Justice\, and the in
clusion of local and indigenous communities and other stakeholders in the
US National Assessment of the Potential Consequences of Climate Variabilit
 y and Change\, among other studies. On a global level\, however\, effor
ts remain divided\, and scientists\, policy-makers\, businesses and commun
ity representatives have not collectively embraced the climate justice iss
ue. \n \n\nWe are pleased to announce the upcoming conference\, &#8220\;J
ust Climate? Pursuing Environmental Justice in the Face of Global Climate
Change\,&#8221\; to take place in Ann Arbor\, MI from March 26-28\, 2004\,
co-funded by the Environmental Justice and Global Climate Change Student
Group (EJCC)\, the Environmental Justice Initiative (EJI)\, the School o
f Natural Resources and Environment (SNRE)\, the Department of Philosphy\,
and the Marshall Weinberg Foundation. The goal of the conference is to f
urther the dialogue among activists\, policy-makers\, and academics from d
iverse communities about how global climate change will affect disadvantag
ed areas and peoples around the world. We aim to identify barriers to and
catalysts of climate justice as well as to envision and promote intersecto
ral and multidisciplinary experiences that exemplify efforts to achieve cl
imate justice. \n\n \nWe are inviting activists\, policy-makers and schol
ars from communities and Universities around the world to submit paper abs
tracts and case study summaries for the conference. The first day of the
conference will be devoted to defining the issue of climate justice and i
dentifying the main barriers to climate justice. The second day will fea
ture case studies and panels from areas where action towards climate justi
ce has been initiated. On the last day participants will identify opport
unities for collaborative research and projects that promote climate justi
ce. \n\n \nWithin this framework\, the conference will explore the follo
wing broad questions: \n \n\n1) How do we define climate justice? What ar
e the main barriers towards achieving climate justice? \n\n2) How will glo
bal climate change affect disadvantaged communities and how does this vary
across regions (locally\, nationally and globally)? \n\n3) What efforts a
re currently being made by communities to either adapt to or mitigate clim
ate change or work towards climate justice? How can other communities lear
n from these efforts? \n\n4) What policies currently exist\, and what poli
cies are needed to protect these communities (locally\, nationally and glo
bally)? \n\n5) How can the various stakeholders cooperate in research and
policy-making efforts? \n \n\nThe major outcome of the conference will be
an edited collection of the presented papers\, case studies\, and transcr
 ibed presentations.\n \n\nPaper abstracts\, case study summaries\, and pr
esentation proposals (no longer than 500 words) should be submitted by Dec
 ember 1st \, 2003 to &#101\;&#106\;&#99\;&#99\;&#112\;&#114\;&#111\;&#112\
