\\'Continuing the Dream…Constructing the World House\\'. The conference
will focus on practical ways we can each build the ‘world house’ that
Dr. King referred to as the next step in creating the beloved community.
\n\nOur plenary speakers include Amy Goodman of Democracy Now\, Reverend L
ennox Yearwood of Hip Hop Caucus as the youth plenary\, civil rights activ

DESCRIPTION:Free Our Schools - Our Education\, Our Lives\, Our Decisions!\n
 \nSDS National Week of Education\nNovember 5 - 13\n\nSDS National Day of D
emands\nFriday November 14th\n\n\nOn November 5\, 2008 SDS will be in soli
 darity with students from France\, Liberia\, Canada\, Ireland\, Germany\,
and more countries participating in an international student day of action
against the privatization of our schools and lives. Since in America thi
s happens to be the day after the presidential election\, people will be d
istracted and it\\'s not a strategic day to act. So\, instead of one day
of action\, on the 5th SDS will launch a national Week of Education and ou
treach\, building up to a national Day of Demands on November 14th.\n\nWee
k of Education\n\nThe goals for this week are to educate\, agitate\, and o
rganize. We need to GROW! This is a great chance to recruit new people t
o SDS. We\\'re also mobilizing students for the national Day of Action im
mediately following this week.\n\nDuring this Week of Education SDSers acr
oss the country will educate ourselves and fellow students on important to
pics including\, but obviously not limited to:\n\n * student debt\n
 * politics\n    * power\n    * oppression\n    * social change\n    * stud
ent and labor movements\n * terrorism (imperialist white supremacist ca
 pitalist patriarchy)\n * privilege\n * war\n * poverty\n * env
ironmental sustainability\n\n ... you know - all the important thin
gs our schools are typically NOT teaching us or are teaching us WRONG!\n\n
We will use creative and participatory education methods such as:\n\n *
  student-led workshops\n * teach-ins\n * street theater\n * puppe
 t shows\n * parades\n * panel discussions\n * movie showings\n
  * radical art shows\n    * banner hangings/ banner drops\n    * invite sp
eakers (Iraq Veterans Against the War\, dissident authors)\n * interact
 ive games\n * political parties (as in fiestas!)\n\n ... and m
ore!\n\nTry and have a daily presence on your campus! Be creative and fun
with your outreach! \n\nLet\\'s remember everyone\\'s minds will be on th
e election results\, so be relevant and talk about those results! Everyth
ing discussed during the Week of Education should be connected to our role
as students and the need for us to organize ourselves for social change!\
n\nLet us know what you do. Let\\'s share ideas to make this successful.
If this week\\'s done right it could mean that our 2009 national conventi
on will have to be held in a STADIUM!\n\nChange comes from US\, not THEM!\
n\nWhich leads us to our...\n\nDay of Demands\n\nOn November 14th we will
take a step toward transforming the movements for student power and access
ible education that we\\'re building in schools around the country into a
Student Movement that can and will make demands at the level necessary to
transform the entire educational system. We will\, with much fanfare and
merrymaking\, publicly make our demands to the people and institutions tha
t control our education system\; the Department of Education\, our school
Administrations\, Student Loan Companies\, and the rest of the unaccountab
le folks who ignore our needs and profit from our exploitation.\n\nThe goa
l of this Day of Demands is to announce the arrival of a militant\, radica
l\, and dedicated student movement and make public our vision for a democr
atic\, liberatory\, and accessible education system. It is to take the po
wer we have been building at our schools and in our communities\, and by m
obilizing collectively allow ourselves to make demands more sweeping and m
ore far reaching than anything we can accomplish at our individual schools
.\n\nOn the Day of Demands SDS chapters from across the country will organ
ize marches\, rallies\, and parades that will end in public presentations
of both our local and national demands to the targets chosen by local chap
ters. Media teams will make sure the whole world hears us.\n\nThe Departm
ent of Education has 10 regional offices in cities across the country whic
h we suggest chapters target if they\\'re close enough. Office locations
 are:\n\n * Boston\, MA\n * New York\, NY\n * Philadelphia\, PA\n
    * Atlanta\, GA\n    * Chicago\, IL\n    * Dallas\, TX\n    * Kansas Cit
 y\, MO\n * Denver\, CO\n * San Francisco\, CA\n * Seattle\, WA\n\
nSpecific addresses and contacts for each regional office\, along with the
states they represent can be found here: http://www.ed.gov/about/contacts
/gen/regions.html.\n\nOf course\, their headquarters is in Washington DC.\
n\nMost of the student debt in this country is through federal loans from
the Department of Education. Not to mention all the horrible policies the
y\\'re responsible for (standardized testing\, No Child Left Behind\, fund
ing public schools according to property values\, etc.)\n\nWe need your he
lp to make the Week of Education and Day of Demands possible and successfu
l! Get on the calls and chats. Play a role in this historic moment. Seri
ously... we need your help. With materials and ideas and other stuff. Pl
ease.\n\nTalk to your chapters and start planning. Let\\'s build this mov
ement and make SDS huge!\n\nPeace\,\nJeff Rousset (Philly SDS/ Drexel SDS)

DESCRIPTION:Dear Friends:\n\n Every two years at this time I write an inspi
rational letter of greeting for this conference announcement. This year th
e letter writes itself. The Seventh National Harm Reduction Conference is
taking place within 9 days of the national elections. There is reason for
optimism. With some mobilization\, the purveyors of eight long years of li
 es\, corruption\, hypocrisy\, destruction\, nepotism\, greed\, callousness
\, con-passion\, and debt creation will be shuttled off into a deep\, dark
\, disused uranium mine. We will have an end to the worst presidency in ou
r history. The characters that have lurked\, like Harry Potter’s death-e
ating foes\, in the White House will be no more (although we all know that
people like Cheney exhibit a Voldemort-like quality of never quite going
away).\n\n A Democrat in the White House will not guarantee that a change
is going to come in any significant fashion. But taking a harm reduction a
pproach of “meeting politicians where they are” and embracing any posi
tive change\, what can we reasonably expect? An end to the morale-crushing
\, exodus-inducing politicization of institutions such as the CDC\, NIDA a
nd SAMSHA should be on the score sheet. An open dialog with the scientific
community about harm reduction-based interventions\, such as naloxone and
syringe exchange\, could be held without the straitjacket of censorship.
Local authorities would actually be encouraged to start and expand syringe
exchange. A new administration might work with Congress to increase fundi
ng for viral hepatitis\, eliminate racialized sentencing disparities for c
rack cocaine\, direct SAMSHA to launch a national overdose prevention stra
tegy\, and formulate goals to make drug treatment on demand ―including b
uprenorphine for those at the margins of the health care system―a realit
 y. Global AIDS funding through PEPFAR would be expanded for countries with
injection-related HIV epidemics and restrictions on abortion providers\,
abstinence requirements in HIV prevention\, and anti-prostitution “pledg
es” would be eliminated. Communities and health officials could pursue e
stablishing safe injection spaces and heroin prescription without having t
o look quite as rigorously over their shoulders for the goon squad to come
beating down the doors. And the federal ban on the funding of syringe exc
hange will ultimately become a footnote in the history of failed governanc
 e. Maybe by the year 2013\, the feds will actually provide some money for
syringe access. We’ve done the groundwork and the evidence exists to sup
port our efforts\, but we will not have an easy path\, no matter who is in
Congress or the White House.\n\n The Seventh National Harm Reduction Conf
erence will have an eye firmly on the national scene. There is no reason w
hy compassion\, science and common sense cannot prevail\, nor any reason w
hy the United States could not adopt a harm reduction framework to address
drug and alcohol problems. Join us in Miami and be part of the direction\
 , planning and brainstorming.\n\n See you there.\n\nAllan Clear\n\nExecuti
