DESCRIPTION: \n\nThe Young Democratic Socialists Annual Winter Conference w
ill take place February 17th to the 19th in New York City. The conference
will feature exciting speakers such as Cornel West\, Frances Fox Piven\, M
aurice Isserman\, and many others.\n\n \n\nNow is a crucial time to be org
anizing\, with the energy from Occupy Wall Street still surging. DSAers an
d YDSers from around the country have been working to build their local Oc
cupations. The conference will allow us to reflect on this work and discus
s how to move forward.\n\n \n\nOur conference will be specially focused on
fighting back against student debt and rising education costs. Students t
oday are facing a very bleak future. From 1981-2010 college tuition has in
creased 7% every year\, more than double the rate of overall inflation\, 3
%. Overall\, college tuition and fees have quadrupled in real terms from 1
 982 to 2007. Additionally\, federal financial aid\, which used to be 80% g
rant based\, is now 80% loans based.\n\n \n\nFor many people access to col
lege involves taking on debt at a rate that we have not seen before. The p
roblems surrounding higher education occur because of policy decisions\, a
nd therefore can be reversed through different decisions. That is why we n
eed to be organizing students to put pressure on decision makers.\n\n \n\n
At the conference you will explore this issue and many others\, as well as
learn organizing skills to help build fight back on your campus. Students
will gather from across the country\, so you can learn more about the str
uggle-taking place on other campuses. Geographical Scope: National

DESCRIPTION:Fishable\, Swimmable? 40 Years of Water Law in Florida and the
United States\nFebruary 23-25\, 2012 at the University of Florida Levin Co
llege of Law\nExpected to be approved for 15 CLER credits\n\n2012 marks th
e 40th anniversary of both the Florida Water Resources Act and the federal
Clean Water Act. In honor of this occasion\, the 18th annual Public Inter
est Environmental Law Conference at the University of Florida Levin Colleg
e of Law will focus on the evolution of water law and policy over the past
  four decades.\n\nPlease join us for...\nThursday Feb. 23\, 6-9 p.m.: Rece
 ption and welcoming remarks\nFriday Feb. 24\, 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.: Panels
 and plenary sessions\nSaturday Feb. 25 9:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m.: Workshops and
closing plenary session\n\nThe Florida Water Resources Act was born out of
a sense of urgency that focused Florida’s policymakers on the need to m
odernize the rapidly developing state’s environmental\, planning and wat
er law. Dean Frank Maloney from the UF College of Law was tasked with draf
ting the model water code\, which became law in 1972. Weighing in at a sli
m 15\,500 words\, the Florida Water Resources Act represented the best thi
nking on water resource administration at the time\, blending eastern and
western water law into something known as the “reasonable-beneficial use
” standard\, dividing the state into watershed-based administrative unit
s with regulatory power and a purse\, and accounting for environmental flo
ws (Minimum Flows and Levels & Reservations of Use). After 40 years and no
w a bulky 155\,000 words\, the Act is still viewed with envy by other stat
es and even foreign governments. Yet many believe Florida\\'s water resour
ces are in a continuing crisis\, as water managers seek to convert the dec
eptively simple mandates of the Act into something that satisfies the dive
 rse constituencies—and resources—that rely on water.\n\nThe atmosphere
prompting the passage of Florida’s water act reflected the broader dema
nd of citizens throughout the country that the government act to address t
he growing problem of water pollution. In enacting the federal Clean Water
Act in 1972\, Congress intended to overcome the shortfalls of prior pollu
tion control efforts. The CWA includes a sweeping commitment to “restore
and maintain the chemical\, physical\, and biological integrity of the Na
tion’s waters\,” by eliminating the discharge of pollutants into navig
able waters and ensuring water quality to support the needs of both humans
and wildlife.1 Despite large strides in reducing water pollution since it
s passage\, the CWA remains the subject of debate among environmental advo
cates and supporters of states’ rights\, among others.\n\nThis year’s
conference will include keynote speakers and panels on a variety of topics
related to water law and policy. Topics will focus on the current state o
f affairs with respect to water regulation and what the future holds for o
ur state’s—and our country’s—water resources. Geographical Scope:

DESCRIPTION:Call to Action: Retire NATO\, Create Jobs & Fund Peace\n\nChica
go – May 2012\n\nSponsored by: Network for a NATO-Free World: Global Pea
ce and Justice*\n\nNATO\, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization\, is hold
ing a summit meeting in Chicago\, May 2012. We\, peace and justice activis
ts\, will gather at a counter summit to voice a new vision of global secur
 ity and peace.\n\nJoin us in Chicago May 18 & 19\, 2012 for a counter-summ
it conference to conceive and help build a more peaceful\, economically se
cure and environmentally sustainable world.\n\nAs the majority of the U.S.
people know\, it’s long past time to end the U.S./NATO war in Afghanist
an\, bring home all U.S. and NATO troops from Afghanistan\, Iraq and aroun
d the world\, to end the attacks on Libya and to begin to rid the world of
weapons of mass destruction and redirect monies from wars and weapons bac
 k to our communities.\n\nDespite its claims\, NATO was never a defensive a
lliance\, and since the end of the Cold War has been transformed into a gl
obal alliance structured to wage “out of area” wars in Asia\, the Midd
le East and North Africa\, as well as to “contain” China. NATO’s cre
ed is aggressive\, expansionist\, militarist and undemocratic.\n\nFrom Yug
oslavia to Afghanistan and Libya the US has used NATO to enhance and exten
d its military\, economic and political aims that ensure U.S. and European
dominance of the resources\, markets and labor of the Global South. It ha
s spread the cost of these adventures to its NATO partners.\n\nWhile ignor
ing human needs here at home\, the U.S. has spent more than a trillion dol
lars on the Afghanistan and Iraq wars\, and tens of billions of dollars mo
re each year to maintain hundreds of military bases and nuclear weapons ac
ross Europe. Instead of wasting money on NATO\, our tax dollars should be
used to provide real security by creating green jobs and investing in infr
 astructure modernization for the 21st century\, clean water\, education\,
housing and health care for all.\n\nThe crisis of every day life in countr
ies around the globe demands international cooperation based on respect fo
r international law\, and national sovereignty\, not wars and an escalatin
g global arms race--an arms race of one\, driven by the US.\n\nThe NATO su
mmit provides an opportunity to join in solidarity with our international
counterparts to mount an education campaign to help people across the Unit
ed States and in other NATO nations understand the true nature of NATO and
mobilize to abolish it.\n\nBy joining together\, we can visibly and nonvi
olently demonstrate how NATO undermines people’s real security in every
dimension of life. As we discuss and demand alternative and life-affirming
foreign policies\, we will help to build the worldwide movement that oppo
ses NATO and its wars and create a world of peace and justice.\n\nDiplomac
 y\, international law\, national sovereignty\, international collaboration
s\, and nonviolent conflict resolution are the foundations of real\, globa
l security.\n\nHelp us mobilize activists to come to Chicago to participat
e in an international conference.\n\nWe demand:\n\n• Complete withdrawal
of all U.S. and NATO troops from Afghanistan.\n\n• Withdrawal of all fo
reign deployed U.S. troops\, bases\, nuclear weapons and “missile defens
es\,”\n\n• Substantial reductions in U.S. and NATO military spending t
o fund our communities and to meet human needs.\n\n• Restitution of the
UN Charter and International Law as means of resolving international dispu
 tes.\n\n• Retire NATO!\n\n*Network for a NATO-Free World: Global Peace a

DESCRIPTION:Z Media Institute was founded in 1994 by cofounders of Z Magazi
ne (1988) and South End Press (1977) to teach radical politics\, media and
organizing skills\, the principles and practice of creating non-hierarchi
cal institutions and projects\, activism\, and vision and strategy for soc
ial change.\n\nClasses are held around Eel Pond in Woods Hole\, Massachuse
tts.\n\nThe members of the initial South End Press collective had all part
icipated in various 1960s and 1970s movements\, but knew little about publ
ishing books or magazines. We felt the Press (and later Z Magazine) should
become an alternative\, democratic\, self-supporting left institution. As
activists we would continue to participate in various movements\, in addi
tion to our publishing work. We would also publish books and articles deal
ing with strategy and future vision\, not just analysis and critique.\n\nW
e had lived through a time of incredible social change\, from civil rights
and black power movements to student and antiwar movements to counter-cul
ture\, women’s\, and gay and lesbian movements to labor\, Native America
n\, and ecology movements. A new politics was developing and we felt left
media had to relate this politics to existing movements\, to those just be
coming radical\, and to a larger public. Otherwise\, they would be ignored
\, revised\, or misrepresented by mainstream media outlets.\n\nSouth End P
ress is now 30-years-old and Z Magazine is 20 years old. Over that time we
\\'ve learned a great deal\, not only about publishing\, but also about ma
instream media and how it prevents any real structural critique of society
. Also\, through participation as an “alternative press” in the mainst
ream publishing industry we have seen censorship (subtle and blatant)\; we
\\'ve learned about control of promotion and distribution\, from reviews t
o bookstore sales to shelf placement.\n\nIn 1994 we decided to pass along
what we knew\, partly to encourage others to start radical\, self-sustaini
ng institutions that could educate\, inspire\, and organize\; partly to me
et people interested in creating and joining a future larger left media ne
twork\; partly to teach a democratic\, participatory\, radical politics an
d a democratic workplace structure and process.\n\nOver 700 students have
attended ZMI so far. Many are now working with media/organizing projects\,
others have started new projects\, some have joined our staff\, others ha
ve become ZMI faculty\, still others have written articles and reviews for
Z Magazine and ZNet\, as well as other progressive publications.\n\n \nCo
urses	\nPolitical courses (vary year by year but) typically include: princ
iples of workplace democracy\, foreign policy\, ecology\, political scienc
 e\, queer theory\, women and revolution\, labor\, race\, youth liberation\
, economic and social vision and strategy\, and more.\n\nMedia courses typ
ically include: Analysis of mainstream media\; starting a media project (n
 ewspaper\, radio\, video\, magazine\, Internet\, organizing)\; challenges
of alternative media\; pressuring mainstream media\; research and investig

DESCRIPTION:As AMC networks grow and deepen\, we are designing new structur
es of conference content to hold and nurture those networks. In addition
to Tracks\, AMC2012 will feature Network Gatherings and Practice Spaces .
We encourage you to carefully assess what structure best meets the needs
of your network and only propose one type of content. There\\'s always nex
t year to do the other thing! Some groups may not want to hold down an ent
ire content area\, but still want to mobilize a crew to attend the AMC tog
ether. In that case\, you should consider organizing a Delegation. Read m
ore about Tracks\, Network Gatherings\, Practice Spaces and Delegations be
low. \n\nThe deadline to propose a Track\, Network Gathering or Practice
Space is November 14th. Propose your idea now! (Delegations don\\'t have
to be proposed). \n\nPlease note: This is not a call for session proposal
 s. The AMC2012 Call for Session Proposals will go out in February 2012. \
n\nRead below for more details and GO HERE TO PROPOSE A TRACK\, NETWORK GA
 THERING\, OR PRACTICE SPACE »\nTRACKS\nA track is a series of 5 - 10 AMC
sessions focused on a specific area of media-based organizing. Media-bas
ed organizing is any collaborative process that uses media\, art or techno
logy to bring about a more just and creative world. Tracks should be faci
litated by two or more organizations or individuals who want to convene a
network of people doing awesome work in a particular area of media-based
organizing. The content of a track should be mostly hands-on skill-sharin
g\, but may also include panel discussions\, caucuses and strategy session
 s. Tracks are an ideal format for newly-forming networks OR established n
etworks that want to deepen collaborative relationships and and share medi
 a-based organizing skills.\n\nNETWORK GATHERINGS\n\nA Network Gathering is
a day-long mini-conference on the Thursday before the AMC. It is a space
for established networks to have in-depth strategy conversations (the kin
ds of conversations that we often try to cram into 90-minute lunch breaks
\, and then realize we need a full day!). Network Gatherings might also i
nvolve skill-sharing\, but it is primarily a strategic planning and organ
izing space to support the year-round collaboration of groups within a ne
twork. A Network Gathering is also a way for a network to prepare itself
to get the most out of the AMC. Network Gatherings should be financially
sponsored by at least one organization\, to help offset the costs of start
ing the AMC a day early. Network Gatherings are the ideal structure for n
etworks that have been convening through the AMC for several years and wan
t to build strategy and infrastructure for ongoing trans-local organizing
. \nPRACTICE SPACES\n\nA Practice Space is an experiment in creating the
world we want to see. It is a space for a network to implement a practic
e that makes the conference more accessible\, transformative and wonderfu
l for everyone. It is also a space for a national network to make meaning
ful connections with Detroit organizers\, learning from and adding to loc
al practice spaces. Practice Spaces are the ideal structure for networks
that are held together by a shared practice (such as healing\, food justic
 e\, community radio\, etc.).\nDELEGATIONS\n\nA delegation is a crew with a
shared identity that combines forces to get themselves to the AMC and is
strategic about their experience of the AMC. A delegation can be a way for
a region to lower collective travel costs and make a plan for what skills
they want to bring back to their local communities. A delegation can als
o be a way for people with a shared identity to find each other before and
during the conference. This might happen through collective fundraising
 appeals\, meet-ups\, matching t-shirts\, flags\, karaoke performances and
any other forms of identification that allow a crew to proclaim their pres
ence. You do not need to propose a delegation\, just organize it! Delegat
ions will be elligible for a limited number of mini-grants to support gras
sroots fundraising efforts. \nFAQ\nCan I propose a combination of track\,
network gathering\, and practice space? \n\nYes\, but it\\'s unlikely tha
t we will accept more than one proposal from the same group. If you feel
strongly that your group needs to do more than one thing\, be sure to give
a detailed explaination of your capacity in the proposal form. \nIf I pr
opose a track\, and it is accepted\, do I still need to submit individual
session proposals in February?\n\nYes. Every single AMC session must go t
hrough the session proposal process in the Spring so that it can be review
ed by AMP staff and advisors. \nWhat is the timeline for organizing a Tra
ck\, Network Gathering or Practice Space? \n\nNovember 2011 - Proposals ar
 e due\n\nDecember 2011 - Accepted proposals are announced\; fundraising be
 gins\n\nJanuary 2012 - Coordinators meeting in Detroit 1/13 - 1/15\n\nFebr
 uary 2012 - Call for AMC2012 Session Proposals goes out\n\nMarch 2012 - Ac
 cepted AMC2012 Sessions are announced\n\nApril 2012 - AMC2012 Session Outl
 ines are finalized\n\nMay 2012 - AMC2012 Session Logistics are finalized\n
 \nJune 2012 - AMC2012 6/28 - 7/1 !\nApproximately how much time will it ta
ke to coordinate a Track\, Network Gathering or Practice Space? \n\nEach
Track\, Network Gathering and Practice Space should have three coordinator
s who can commit an average of 7 hours per week between December 2011 and
June 2012 (this is variable and may be more like 2 hours per week earlier
in the year and closer to 15 or 20 in the final weeks leading up to the AM
 C). In addition to its three coordinators\, a Track\, Network Gathering o
r Practice Space should have 3 - 5 \\'supporters\\' who help out with spec
ific tasks as needed. \nWhat support will I receive from AMP? \n\nAMP st
aff will advise on the development of vision and content of Tracks\, Netwo
rk Gatherings\, and Practice Spaces and facilitate connections between co
ordinators\, potential participants and funders.\n\nCoordinators are invit
 ed to a meeting in Detroit\, January 13 - 15\, 2012 (bundle up—it will b
e cold). At the retreat we will share and develop skills to be used in the
AMC organizing process: facilitative leadership\, popular education\, gra
ssroots fundraising\, online communications infrastructure\, and accessibi
 lity.\n\nAll Tracks\, Network Gatherings\, Practice Spaces\, and Delegatio
ns will be eligible for a limited number of mini-grants to support grassro
ots fundraising to get their networks to the AMC. All will have access to
AMP’s online communication tools for track organizing throughout the yea
r.\nCan I bounce my ideas off somebody at AMP before submitting my proposa
l?\nYes! Email jenny@alliedmedia.org Geographical Scope: National

attempting to divide and eliminate the rest of us one group at a time. Str

reach that goal. Join us in mounting this national MARCH ON WASHINGTON DC

the unorganized – the high paid\, the low paid and the unpaid. We are on

st those who seek profits at any expense. The corporations love war\, will
seek profits at anyone’s expense\, and they never hear or heed our crie
 s. Their motto is\, “pollute\, shoot\, and don’t give a hoot!” Our m

are marching toward the building of what history demands from us – a wo

DESCRIPTION:Why TransFaith In Color?\nIlluminating A History of Invisibilit
y	\n\nWithin the broad LGBT Movement\, there have been problematic disconn
ects with the Transgender Community. These were particularly noticeable i
n the 2009 Employment Non-Discrimination Act’s political and social orga
nizing efforts. Allies and members within the LGBT community struggled wi
th whether the Transgender population could be included in this first wave
of those being given access to employment protection under the law. This
disconnect is compounded by the challenges members of the transgender com
munity face within communities of faith – even those who profess to be p
rogressive and inclusive. To have the strongest communities of faith and
social justice movement\, we must have one that not only affirms but activ
ely includes those who are lesbian\, gay\, bisexual and yes\, transgender.
One of the ways to fill this gap is to empower members of the transgende
r community to engage with broader segments of the LGBT movement and beyon
 d. \n \nThe Solution: \nGrassroots Education + Empowerment \n\nTo addres
s this\, the Freedom Center for Social Justice (FCSJ) invited a group of t
ransgender people of color to the table to shape and frame a summit to tra
in a cohort of transgender people of faith to work as grassroots activists
and opinion leaders around issues of sexuality within their respective fa
ith and general communities. Ultimately\, the Summit provided resources a
nd technical support to educate\, develop appropriate strategies\, and inc
rease networking opportunities for transgender men and women as they build
\, grow\, and mobilize around ‘personal’ and policy relevant issues. \
n\nThe Summit has now led to a TransFaith In Color Conference. The Confer
ence will be an annual event for transgender people and allies. For 2011
and 2012\, this event will be held in Charlotte\, North Carolina. Geograp

DESCRIPTION: Demand Good Jobs\, Healthcare\, Affordable Education\, Equa
lity and Peace\n Say NO to the Republican Agenda\n Money for human n
eeds\, not for corporate greed\n\nOn August 27\, 2012\, while the Republic
an National Convention selects a candidate for president\, we will be marc
hing in the streets of Tampa\, Florida demanding jobs\, healthcare\, educa
tion\, equality and peace. We will let the entire world know\, “We have
had enough of the endless attacks on the rights of working people and our
standard of living!” We will defend Medicare\, Medicaid and Social Secur
ity. We will defend ourselves against union busting. We will defend our ch
ildren\\'s right to an affordable\, quality education. We want money spent
on human needs\, not on wars overseas and corporate greed.\n\nIn Congress
and in states across the country\, the Republicans and their Tea Party al
lies have unleashed a war on the people of this country. While the Republi
cans bailed out Wall Street\, many of us lost our homes. While they push t
ax cuts for the rich\, they are destroying working families and our way of
life by cutting programs that serve us. The Republicans are trying to bre
ak our unions and take away our right to bargain collectively. They are sp
earheading attacks on immigrants and promoting an agenda of racism and hat
red.\n\nFor too long\, too many politicians in both political parties have
ignored our needs\, while serving the interests of the rich and powerful.
We need to take things into our own hands and make them understand the co
nsequences of their actions. Monday\, August 27\, 2012\, is the time to ad
vance the cause of justice and make our voices heard. Tampa\, Florida is t
he place for all of us to raise our demands. Whether you are working to de
fend reproductive rights\, standing up against attacks on immigrants and r
acist discrimination\, resisting attacks on working people\, or saying no
to government cutbacks\, we can come together from across the country to l
et our voices be heard. From California\, to Illinois\, to New York\, we c
an join our brothers and sisters in the South in mobilizing and building a
united protest with a clear message\, “No to the Republicans! We demand
  good jobs\, healthcare\, affordable education\, equality and peace!”\n\
nOn Monday\, August 27\, 2012\, the attention of the entire world will be
focused on Tampa\, Florida. The Republican National Convention brings toge
ther some of the worst politicians that this country has to offer. We\\'re
calling on all those ready to fight back against the attacks launched by
the Republican Party and their corporate masters to take to the streets an
d demand a better future for our families\, our communities and our childr
