This free conference is open to the general public and is being co-sponsored by the UCO Democratic Socialists, the Association for Women’s Studies, the Gay Alliance for Tolerance and Equality, Phi Alpha Theta, and The Interfaith Alliance of Oklahoma.
At 3:00 p.m. on Friday, Dr. Jim Bissett will deliver a keynote address entitled “Christianity and Progressive Politics in America.” Dr. Bissett, the William J. Story Professor of History at Elon College, is the author of Agrarian Socialism in America: Marx, Jefferson, and Jesus in the Oklahoma Countryside, 1904-1920 (Norman: University of Oklahoma Press, 1999).
At 4:30 p.m. on Friday, following a light reception, Conna Wilkinson, Assistant Director of the United Methodist Church’s Skyline Urban Ministry, will present a workshop entitled “Putting It Into Practice: Peace Education.”
On Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m., the Rev. Jeremy Basset, Minister of Congregational Outreach at the United Methodist Church of the Servant in Oklahoma City, and 1992 Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace Award winner John Mkhize will speak on “Christianity and Social Justice: South African Experiences.”
At 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, the Rev. Paula Sophia Schonauer of the Cathedral of Hope-OKC and James M. Branum, Co-Chair of the Oklahoma Green Party, will address the question “Is Capitalism Christian?”
At 11:00 a.m., Dr. Theresa Vaughan of the University of Central Oklahoma’s Department of Humanities & Philosophy and the Rev. Dr. Lee Hunt, Deacon at St. Monica’s Roman Catholic Church in Edmond, will lead a session on “Christianity and the Developing World.”
The conference will conclude with a reception and panel discussion by conference participants, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., entitled “Faith in Action: Personal Perspectives.”
