Recent revelations about the Bush administration's warrantless eavesdropping and seizure of civilian phone records within the United States have raised profound questions about how much of their privacy and civil liberties Americans are giving up in the name of greater security. This new kind of spying has raised concerns on both sides of the political aisle about the spectre of an Orwellian future, in which Americans have no privacy whatsoever and mysterious,
un-checked government agencies are privvy to our every communication. But what is it precisely that the National Security Agency is doing? Are millions of Americans inspected by this program, as some have claimed? Is there any real defense against these intrusions? Do they make us safer? And what does the future hold?

The Century Foundation, an organization dedicated to informing the public debate, is putting together a free forum for NYC summer interns on the issue, with four experts on electronic intelligence and the NSA answering questions about the increasingly controversial intersection of our privacy and our safety. Be there, meet other students in the city, enjoy free beverages and snacks, and remember:

Shhh…someone may be listening.
