When he was a senior at Swarthmore College, Mark Hanis began to mobilize students and legislators across the US in an effort to end genocide in Darfur, Sudan. Impelled by his family’s history of surviving the Holocaust, Hanis and a group of students launched the Genocide Intervention Network (GI-Net) with five members of Congress and almost 400 students representing 42 states. Its mission is to empower global citizens with the tools to advance initiatives that prevent and stop genocide.
Since its founding, GI-Net has raised over $250,000 from
grassroots efforts and plans to use the donations to train and
recruit female African civilian police to focus on gender-based
violence in Darfur. GI-Net also empowers citizens through
education and advocacy, and is now building the first permanent
anti-genocide constituency to foster the necessary political will to prevent and stop genocide.
