312-560-9311IRISH FREEDOM COMMITTEE COMMEMORATES 35TH ANNIVERSARY OF BLOODY SUNDAY
IN ST. PATRICK'S DAY PARADE
MARCH 17, 2007
The Irish Freedom Committee will march in this years' downtown Chicago
St. Patrick's Day parade, Saturday March 17th, to remember the 35th
anniversary of the 1972 British Army massacre of fourteen innocent
civil rights marchers on Bloody Sunday, in Derry, Ireland.
Thirty-five years ago, on January 30th, 1972, fourteen Catholic civil
rights marchers were slain in cold blood by British Army snipers using
high power assault weapons, as they marched for basic human rights in
Derry, Ireland. Half of the dead were under the age of 20, and many
were shot in the back as they ran or as they tried to rescue the
wounded. Thirty-five years later, no British army officer has been
charged with the murders, or sentenced to even a day in prison.
The Irish Freedom Committee has held several events across the country
this year to observe the somber 35th anniversary of Bloody Sunday. On
Tuesday January 30th of this year, twin events in Boston,
Massachusetts; and Albuquerque, New Mexico; remembered the victims and
educated the community about the events of the day. In Boston, a
six-hour event in a packed bar in Cambridge paid tribute to the
memories of the dead with a long moment of silence after their names
were read out, followed by poetry readings, speakers, and Irish
republican bands playing into the night. In Albuquerque, a day-long
educational screening of the film "Bloody Sunday" powerfully and
accurately told the story of the British Army massacre and cover-up,
with a lively question-and-answer session after the screenings finding
the passion for justice has not gone out in New Mexico.
Veteran Irish Republican Frank O'Neill, former political prisoner and
three-time hunger striker, will lead the Irish Freedom Committee in
the downtown Chicago parade on St. Patrick's Day. Marchers are
welcome to join the IFC unit in the parade– call 312-560-9311 for
assembly point and meeting time.
The Charlie Kerins Cumann of the Irish Freedom Committee hosts an
Easter commemoration in Chicago this year on Sunday April 15th – for
