Lynne Stewart, the New York attorney facing 25 - 40
years in prison for defending a jailed Arab militant,
will speak at the Enoch Davis Center in St. Petersburg
on April 10th.

The 65-year-old attorney gained national attention in
November 2003 when then-Attorney General John Ashcroft
travelled to New York to personally announce her
indictment on charges of supporting terrorism.

The government accused Stewart of aiding her client,
the radical Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman, in 2000 by giving
a press release to Reuters News Service in Cairo,
Egypt, and of being present when her co-defendants
allegedly aided her client in writing letters.

Civil liberties and human rights groups such as the
National Lawyer's Guild, the Center for Consitutional
Rights and the National Conference of Black Lawyers
have expressed outrage at Stewart's conviction,
warning of the erosion of legal consitutional
protections in the post-911 era.

On April 10th, Stewart will participate in a forum at
the Enoch Davis Center on the topic of defending the
free speech and democratic rights of oppressed and
colonized peoples.

Joining Stewart on the panel will be two Florida radio
hosts discussing the increasing repression of black
voices in the media. Local African community activist
Connie Burton will speak on the cancellation of her
weekly talk show from Tampa's listerner-sponsored WMNF
radio and Ital-K will discuss the censorship of his
program on NPR station WLRN radio in Miami.

Uhuru Movement leader Omali Yeshitela will present an
African working class perspective on American
democracy, including a review of government efforts to
silence the black liberation movement, from the FBI's
COINTELPRO of the 1960s to the 1996 police teargassing
of St. Petersburg's Uhuru House.

The forum will begin at 2:00 pm on Sunday, April 10th
at the Enoch Davis Center, located at 1111 18th Ave.
S. in St. Petersburg. For more information, call
727-821-6620.
