|This is a 30 page article I wrote in December 2006. The article explores the issue of K-12 (mostly but not exclusively high school) student activism in U.S. public schools. It features original interviews with teachers, leaders of youth groups and former high school activists. Some of the topics discussed include organizational structure, organizing in inner-city schools, adult involvement, opposition from authorities (and the reasons behind it), student free speech rights in theory and practice and how teachers can support student activism.|
This article was originally written for a graduate-level class on Urban Education at Temple University. My primary audience is socially-conscious teachers who want to encourage their students to get involved, but it should be useful to students, youth advocates and researchers as well.
