Patrick Murphy for Lowell City Council
Notes
This exciting city council campaign is seeking interns, organizers and volunteers to elect a unique, young, up-and-coming candidate to the Lowell City Council. Patrick Murphy, who impressed many with his run for U.S. Congress in the 5th District in 2007, is currently campaigning for the November 2009 city council election.

Considered an unconventional candidate by some, Murphy runs independent of any donors or political party. He offers creative, thoughtful and practical ideas for greater democracy and community involvement, a cleaner and safer environment, smarter land-use and transportation planning, a balanced budget and intelligent economic growth. Viewing involvement in the city council as true public service, Murphy has pledged to forego the councilor's stipend -- sparking a trend termed the "Murphy Pledge" by the _Lowell Sun_. (Please see the website, www.thinkmurphy.com for further information about the candidate.)

Interns and volunteers will help the Murphy campaign reach out to the Lowell community through door-to-door canvassing, organizing and attending community events, campus outreach, communications, database management, sign-holding, etc. This will be a true grassroots effort. Murphy is eschewing political fundraising and is instead suggesting that those who wish to contribute financially to his campaign do so by donating to one of the local charities with which he is involved. Language skills, knowledge of Lowell and Lowell politics and any previous campaign experience would all be helpful, but everyone is welcome to participate and training will be provided.
