United StatesGREETINGS from the People’s Music Network for Songs of Freedom and Struggle and from our local participating organizations. We invite you, your family, and friends to join us for our 2010 Winter Gathering in New York City.
WHO ARE WE? People’s Music Network is an organization of people who use music and culture to promote progressive ideas and values. We are committed to working with and supporting grassroots and community organizations to explore and present the diversity of people's culture. We learn from our communities and from each other, and we have fun doing it!
WHAT WILL HAPPEN AT THE WINTER GATHERING? The Winter Gathering will begin Friday night, January 29, with a concert at the New York Society for Ethical Culture in Manhattan. This concert will be open to the general public. Saturday and Sunday activities will take place January 30-31 at the Renaissance Charter School in Jackson Heights, Queens. These will include workshops ranging from song swaps, to discussions and presentations, to teaching sessions, and more. There will also be a Saturday open Round Robin concert (one song per person), and a Sunday Songs of the Spirit a cappella singing session. In addition, there will be plenty of opportunities for informal singing, jamming, and networking. There will be a sales table for CDs, tapes, songbooks, etc., as well as invited vendors. Child care will be available Saturday and Sunday, and there will be a children’s concert on Saturday. The registration fee includes meals. We share the necessary work at a PMN Winter Gathering, so adult participants are expected to do a one-hour work shift helping out with such jobs as registration, food preparation, and sound reinforcement. Everyone is expected to help with cleanup.
PLEASE BRING voices, instruments, songs, stories, ideas, warm clothing (it is winter!), product to sell, love, joy, friendship, and a willingness to share.
PLEASE DO NOT TO BRING alcohol, controlled substances, weapons, or pets. (Guide dogs are OK.) Also, please avoid wearing strong fragrances or other chemicals to which people could have an adverse reaction. Please note that smoking is not permitted in or in the immediate vicinity of either building.
REGISTRATION is open to all members of PMN or any of the participating organizations, and their families. Participating organizations include the Renaissance Charter School, the New York Society for Ethical Culture, the Brooklyn Women’s Chorus, the New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club, the Walkabout Clearwater Chorus, and the Peoples’ Voice Cafe.
