Description
Our present civilization is unique in world history because of the tremendous complexity of our technology and how it has redefined society. From interstates and their accompanying suburbs and fast food to the information and social networking of the internet to the explosion of consumer goods and advertising, modern technology has altered the fundamental ways society interacts with itself and the world. How will this shaping of society by technology and the corresponding creation of technology by society continue in the near and distant future? Can a civilization as resource intensive and complex as ours persist indefinitely? By examining the role of science and technology in the society of tomorrow, we can better plan and decide our actions in the present to hasten or avoid the possibilities of the future.

The 2010 Purdue Student Pugwash Conference on April 9th and 10th will feature speakers who will address the concerns arising from our technological progression. This conference, entitled Our Technological Future: Problems, Perils, and Promises, will feature Howard Bloom and Dr. Timothy Sands.
