United StatesTrue Colors 18 is right around the corner! Our theme this year
is belonging and it couldn’t be more timely! Lesbian, gay,
bisexual, transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) youth without
support face a parade of “horribles.” A LGBTI youth’s risk of
suicide, substance abuse, harassment, homelessness, truancy,
self harm, and even cigarette smoking correlate with their sense
of connection and belonging at home, at school and in the community.
The more connected they feel, the lower the risk.
The less connected, the higher the risk. It just makes sense, doesn’t it?
So this year, we are all about inclusion and belonging. Here are just a few highlights:
• Expanding our vision: a humorous look at challenging our binaries, by
nationally known speaker, author and consultant, Robyn Ochs (Friday
• Hidden Voices: the Lives of LGBT Muslims with queer Muslim activist,
Faisal Alim (Saturday Keynote)
• Coming Out Bi in a Gay/Straight World, a workshop by A.J. Walkley
author of QUEER GREER which tells the tale of a high school girl
coming to terms with her bisexuality when she falls for a boy and
a girl at the same time.
• Supporting Caregivers of Young Children who identify as Transgender
or Gender Variant with Nancy Lustman, Ph.D. a New Haven based
clinician who has worked with many families of transgender and gender
• Helping Families Adjust to a Gay or Lesbian Child by Michael C. LaSala,
PhD, director of the MSW program and associate professor at the School
of Social Work at Rutgers University and author of Coming Out, Coming
Home: Helping Families Adjust to a Gay or Lesbian Child
It is going to be a great event with more to choose from than ever. In spite of the pressures
of rising costs and a diffi cult economy, we decided not to raise our prices (we
haven’t raised prices in years!). Two keynotes, a plenary, closing entertainment and
a choice of more than 125 workshops by an elite corps of presenters…. Wow. Where
else can you get so much for so little?
Belonging. It matters. And now all we need is YOU!
